Monkstown and Muskerry travel to Carton House this week to play in Europe’s biggest golf competition and both have hopes of returning with an All-Ireland title. Both clubs face All-Ireland semi-finals on Friday morning. Muskerry are in action in the AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield while Monkstown aim to win their first AIG Senior Cup title. Both clubs have been busy preparing, on and off the course. The cost of sending a team to compete in Carton House quickly runs into five figures when you take into account all of the costs associated. Despite the costs, it’s a great opportunity for both clubs and one which all of their members are looking forward to. John Murphy eagled his second last hole of the day today to jump into the lead after two rounds of strokeplay qualifying at the European Boys Team Championships in Czech Republic. After opening with a bogey, John added two birdies to turn on -1. He played steady par golf all the way back until a great eagle on the par five 17th saw him move to -3 and jump into the lead. It was another good day for Ireland as they took four of the first five spots, and finished 23 shots ahead of second placed.

John Murphy (Kinsale) shot a level par 72 on the opening day of the European Boy’s Team Championships today. The competition is taking place in Czech Republic and Murphy was one of the later starters this morning and opened with birdie. He had three bogies on the front nine but turned on +1, two birdies and a bogey on the back nine meant that he signed for a level par 72 to lie in 5th place. It was a very good day for Ireland, Kevin leBlanc holds the lead on -4 and all six Irish golfers are in the top 20. Tomorrow will be an important day for the Irish, the second round of strokeplay qualifying will determine the matchplay draws with the top four countries playing-off for the Championship title.

On Sunday, it’s Castlemaryr’s turn with the inland links course retaining it’s season ending position on the golfing calendar. With both Muskerry and Monkstown hoping to be in Cups and Shields action on Saturday there’s a good opportunity for members of both clubs to get out and play on Sunday. The event is again supported by John Mullins from Amarenco Solar who has been a long time supporter of Castlemartyr. Entry for Castlemartyr is €30 and the format has reverted to an 18 hole (timesheet) to allow the maximum number of golfers take part. There’s a generous prize fund in place including nett prizes. vey Barry (Douglas Pro-Shop) won his first big event on the PGA Irish Region tour yesterday with a great round in Rosslare. Playing in tough weather conditions the Douglas Assistant Pro won by two shots in the Kelly’s Resort sponsored Rosslare Pro-Am. Barry started well with a run of birdies on the third, fourth and fifth, but he gave two shots back before the turn with bogies on the seventh and ninth. Despite playing the very difficult conditions Davey had a great back nine, he added four birdies including two on 17 and 18 to see him finish two shots clear of Damien McGrane, Mark Murphy and Colm Moriarty. David Ryan shot a two under par 70 to claim fifth position alongside David Higgins, and Wayne O’Callaghan finished in the top twenty. It was a good weekend for Davey who was also named in the field for the Irish PGA Championship which takes place in Moyvalley at the end of this month.
