A final round 68 from Niall Turner saw him jump 21 places from 44th position into a tie for 23rd place. The Corkman had a nervy start, he missed the first five fairways and bogeyed the par four 6th hole, but he recovered before the turn and birdied 8 & 9 to get back to level par for the tournament.
There were no signs of fatigue for Turner or his caddie Kenneth Quillinan who had played 34 holes on Saturday after a rain suspension on Friday. The Waterfall native parred the first seven holes of the back nine before chipping in for birdie on the 17th. The big hitting Turner then reached the 542 yard par five 18th in two shots, and took two putts to birdie the hole and sign for a 68. The two birdies saw Continue reading

Turner is currently T17, with the final players on the back nine on the course. He’s in a group of 16 on -1 while leader Keith Horne (RSA) is on 0-5.

The Mercy Hospital will hold their annual fundraising golf classic in Fota Island Resort on Friday 22nd April next. The funds raised will go towards the building of the Mercy Cancer Care Centre
Brian Dunphy & Jack French
Teams of four cost €400. The Mercy Cancer CARE Centre is a community funded cancer centre providing hope and healing close to home. For the one in three of us who will be diagnosed with cancer in our lives, at the Mercy, we want to be sure that that news is told in the most supportive way possible. We are building a specialised Cancer Centre next to the Mercy Hospital that will provide a quiet safe place for patients and their family to help deal with bad news. Volunteer organiser, Jack French is joined by Brian Dunphy (former Board Chairman) in organising our annual Golf Classic. The Golf Classic could not happen without the knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm Jack and Brian so generously give.
Monkstown’s Cian McNamara shot an impressive 68 in Adare on Monday to win the Munster PGA winter series event. This was just the second event to take place in the series, no less than three scheduled events were cancelled due to the weather before Christmas. McNamara had a strong finish to the season in 2015 and he’s started 2016 in sparkling form. Although he dropped a shot early on thanks to a three putt on the 4th, he regained a stroke on the index one 5th hole. He went on to birdie the 8th, 10th, 15th and 16th to sign for a four under par 68. The Limerick native has been working hard over the winter season, along with coach Eddie Doyle, he’s also been working with Peter O’Keeffe’s TPI Golf Fitness based Continue reading

PGA Professional Wayne O’Callaghan is giving golfers plenty of options when it comes to preparing for the new season. While many courses are still closed, the range at Fernhill and Wayne’s indoor performance studio are both open for business. Wayne is running an innovative putting clinic next month where a maximum of four students will be taken through their paces on the green. Wayne explained how he’s planning to run the clinics: “First of all the clinic involves putter fitting, checking if the the length and loft of the putter suits a student – using the academy’s quinticballroll software. It will also cover green reading which covers the grain on greens, moisture and how they can affect break and pace. A number of training aids will be used to tighten up the length and stroke path. Finally drills on getting long putts closer to the hole on a regular basis and short putting drills and data on tour pros shared.” Details of the dates and times of all the classes are available from Continue reading
Tommy O’Driscoll got his season off to a good start with a top five finish in the Copa Andalucia in Guadalmina Golf Club in Marbella. O’Driscoll signed for a 67 in his final round and was one of only four golfers to break 70. He made the 36 hole halfway point comfortably after two consecutive 71’s, in fact he was only one shot off the lead at the halfway point. A 77 in the third round damaged his chances of a win, but the Paris based amateur recovered today with a five under par round. The former Ulster Boys champion was four under after nine and added two birdies on the 10th and 13th. He gave a shot back on the par five 16th however, but steadied again with pars on the two closing holes to leave finish on 67, and -2 for the tournament.
