Muskerry claimed another Munster Pennant on Monday, they won the Munster Final of the Fred Daly Trophy in Clonmel. This was their second win in three years, having reached the final in 2017, 2018 and 2019. This year marks the third of a three year cycle with the current players, and four of the team who were beaten in last years final returned this year to win in style. Internationals win Pro Shop Challenge IV
There was great excitement in Kinsale on Thursday for the fourth staging of the annual Pro Shop Challenge. This year’s charity match was titled the “Internationals v Professionals, as Kinsale’s two Irish Internationals John Murphy and Eoghan Cassidy took on Kinsale’s PGA Professionals Ger Broderick and Ian Stafford. Murphy has been a senior international for two years while Cassidy picked up his first international cap at under 14 level this year. There was a special guest there on the day, the Mullingar scratch cup was in the pro shop, that was thanks to John Murphy’s win a week before in the famous Leinster tournament. As play got underway it was the Professionals who took the lead, thanks to a birdie from Stafford on the first. Cassidy levelled the match on the 5th with a tap in birdie after a perfect approach shot.

John Murphy was impressed with his new partner, it was the first time they played together in a competition. “Eoghan was so impressive, he drove the ball like a professional” said the college Senior. “He’s a class act and has huge things in store for him. I really enjoyed watching him learn and gain experience in front of a large crowd, it was an opportunity I could only have dreamed of when I was his age.” There was a hint of green keepers revenge on the course for the event, tight fairways and lightning fast greens challenged all four golfers as they put on a show for the large gallery. The course in Farrangalway was in excellent condition, the new changes to the 9th, 17th and 18th have bedded in and there was scarcely a blade of grass out of place on the championship course. Muskerry will hold the annual Bruen Boys and Youths Trophy on Monday 26th August, and there will be plenty of golfers hoping to add their name to the list of famous winners. Lee Valley’s Keelan McCarthy is the holder and he’ll be looking to follow Cathal Butler and Sean Desmond who are among very few to win the Bruen Youths twice. Kinsale’s Butler won in 2013 and 2014, and Desmond won in 2016 and 2017. The Bruen Youths started in 1986 as a boys (under 18) competition but later moved to youths level. Jack Murphy wins Kerry Boys Championship, Daniel O’Sullivan wins Plate

Young Douglas golfer Jack Murphy might be just 13 years old, but he made a big impression in Ballybunion today when he won the famous Kerry Boys Championship. And it was a double success for Cork as Daniel O’Sullivan won the Plate Final.
Murphy added his name to a list of high profile winners after a excellent display of golf this afternoon. He was up against Lee Valley’s Keelan McCarthy in an all-Cork final, and despite being 5 years younger, the Douglas golfer came out on top. He got off to a flying start this afternoon, he was three up after six holes on the challenging Cashen course. By the turn he added another to go five up, and he closed out the match on the 14th after winning 5&4. Strong Cork Challenge in Kerry Boys
There’s plenty of Cork interest in Ballybunion today as the round of 16 matchplay gets underway. The Cashen course in North West Kerry proved to be a good challenge for some of Ireland’s top young golfers over the past two days, with six Cork golfers making it through to the last sixteen. Mukerry’s Fionn Hickey shot the low round yesterday, a 73 saw him top day two and added to his opening 76, he qualified comfortably. The Irish International had a colourful scorecard yesterday and interesting it included four birdies – all of which came on the par three’s. Tom Higgins from Roscommon was the top qualifier on 148, with Hickey one shot behind on 149.

Sugrue through to US Amateur Matchplay

James Sugrue is through to the final 64 in the US Amateur in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The Mallow man was on the cut line of +4 when play was suspended last night, and had two holes to play to complete his round. Needing two pars to get rthrough, Sugrue made quick work of the par three 17th, birdieing the hole to put himself in a great position. He finished off the round with a regulation par on the difficult closing hole to qualify in the top half of the draw on +3.
Speaking after the strokeplay was completed, Sugrue was delighted to progress. “I was just thinking par-par to be honest as they are two tough holes. There was a lot of rain overnight and the course softened up a bit, so I was delighted to make the putt on 17. The greens had been running at 13.5 so I had been very tentative earlier in the week.” Pinehurst No 2, famous from the 2014 US Open among other majors is proving to be one of the toughest US Amateur courses, the 7,400 yard Donald Ross designed course is playing to a stroke average of 77, proving to be a worthy challenge for the world’s top amateurs.
The Amateur Champion is up against England’s Alex Fitzpatrick in the round of 64 and he’s looking forward to the matchplay format, despite the challenge of the course. “It’s the hardest course I’ve played and you have to be really cute about where you put the ball. At least now I can give a few putts a go after the rain.”
