Feerick, Collins and Deasy named on Munster U14 team, Lyons misses out in Irish Seniors Close

Ronan Feerick (Mallow), Zak Collins (Douglas) and Mel Deasy (Bantry Bay) were all named on the Munster Under 14 interprovincial team today, in advance of the interpro’s which take place on Tullamore in two weeks time.

In Tralee today Cork’s Pat Lyons missed out on a win at the Irish Seniors Close. Lyons signed for a 77 in the final round and finished in third place behind Castletroy’s Eamonn Haugh. Lyons had led the competition after 18 holes and after 36 holes. Castlemartyr’s John O’Brien secured his top ten position with a 76 to finish in 6th place, and Bandon’s Donal O’Donovan was also in the top ten. Tom Cleary finished in 17th place and also finished in second place in the over 60 category, while Muskerry’s Hugh O’Leary and Douglas’ Karl Bornemann were in the top 20. Cork’s Peter Cowley won the over 70 category.

Lyons retains lead at Irish Seniors Close

Pat Lyons (Cork Golf Club) has retained his lead after the second round of the Irish Seniors Close at Tralee today. Lyons shot a three over par 75, on the second consecutive day that no player in the field managed to break par. The Cork Golf Club member has a one shot lead going into the final round. John O’Brien and Donal O’Donovan both remain in the top ten, they matched scores again today with 68’s and they are tied for 7th place six shots behind the leader. Irish Seniors Open Champion Tom Cleary carded a second round 76 to climb up to 15th position, and he also holds the lead in the over 60 category. Karl Bornemann (Douglas) is also in a tie for 15th place. Cork’s Peter Cowley is second in the over 70 category, three shots off the lead. Muskery’s Hugh O’Leary and Kinsale’s Jerry Crean also made the cut for the final day.
8-0 win for Munster Girls, Healy secures top ten in Connacht

The Munster Girls side won their second match today to finish up in runner up spot at the Interprovincials in Slieve Russell. There were wins for everyone today as the Munster side had an 8-0 whitewash of Connacht. Sarah Byrne (Douglas) and Grace McGrath (East Cork) won their foursomes match on the 18th while Mitchelstown’s Ciara Leonard wrapped up her match on the 15th. In the singles there were wins for Byrne and Leonard as McGrath was rested. There was no joy for the Munster Ladies as they drew with Connacht to finish in fourth place.
Valerie Clancy, Mairead Martin and Rachel Thompson were all in action in European Girls Championships in Norway again today, this time playing in the matchplay (flight b) stage. Clancy won her foursomes match and there was a win too for Martin while Thompson halved her match. The Irish girls team go on to play Netherlands tomorrow in the semi-final
A final round 76 saw Kinsale’s Mark Healy secured a top ten finish at the Connacht Boys in Galway Golf Club today. John Murphy had a 74 in his final round and he finished in a tie for 15th place. The competition was won by Limerick’s Ciaran Vaughan who finished two clear of the field.
The date for the Bruen Youths in Muskerry has been confirmed and entries are now open. The 36 hole strokeplay event takes place on Monday 15th August and marks the start of Muskerry’s Bruen Open Week.
