Butler takes Top Golfer title in Fota Island

Cathal Butler delivered a strong message on Sunday when he won the Top Golfer Senior Scratch Cup at Fota Island.  The Kinsale and Maynooth University golfer announced his return to top level golf following a serious arm injury in August last year that could have threatened his participation at the top level.

14 year old Sara Byrne from Douglas has got a call up to the Irish Girls Under 16 team that will play Wales in Cardigan Golf Club at the end of this month.

The Douglas golfer had a great run last year, claiming a place on the Munster Girls Under 18 team despite being just 13 at the time.  She was a key part of the Douglas Senior Cup team winning five out of six of her matches.  The talented teenager had a good start to the 2016 season, last weekend she finished in the top 15 in the famous Carlow Scratch Cup.

ILGU Coaching Systems Manager Gillian O’Leary, formerly of Cork Golf Club will be one of the three coaches travelling with the teams.  The matches will be played on Tuesday 29th March and the format will include singles and foursomes.

Castlemartyr Links was covered in a welcome sunshine yesterday as the Ron Kirby designed links played host for the Munster finals of the Irish Schools Senior Championships.  Castlemartyr was a late replacement venue as the original venue was deemed unplayable due to the recent adverse weather.  The inland links provided a fair challenge for the 20 golfers, mostly single figure handicappers who relished the tight fairways and fast greens.

Double-Double for David Higgins

David Higgins made it a double-double today, he won his second consecutive Munster PGA event, and his second consecutive Waterville Pro-Am.  Higgins has jumped to the top of the Premium Golf Brands Order of Merit in the weather shortened Munster PGA Winter Series.

Dave O’Donovan (Muskerry) was the 2015 winner of the Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup. 

Lee Valley are set for a bumper event next month as they’ll host the 54 hole EMC Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup.  Plans are at an advanced stage for the important competition and this year the competition is a counting event for the World Amateur Golf Rankings.  The WAGR status is likely to help Tournament Director Vincent Drinan and the organising committee, and several high profile amateurs have already entered.  Since Jeff Hopkins turned professional in late 2015, there are now 12 former entrants who have headed for the paid ranks.  This of course includes current PGA Tour player Shane Continue reading →

Spioraid Naoimh & Patrician Academy, Irish Schools Senior Championship

The Munster finals of the Irish Schools Senior Championships take place on Monday next in Castlemartyr Links.  The finals were originally scheduled for the Ring of Kerry, but the event was moved to Castlemartyr owing to weather concerns and the running inland links layout should provide a fine test for the four schools involved.

Colaiste an Spioraid Naoimh and Patrician Academy carry Cork hopes, Spioraid Naoimh face Crescent College Limerick in their semi-final, and Patrician Academy face De la Salle Waterford.  The semi-finals start at 9.00am and the final takes place after lunch.
