Peter Cowley Retains Connacht Veterans Title
Cork’s Peter Cowley retained the Fred Perry Trophy, winning the Connacht Veterans Open Championship at Tuam Golf Club. The reigning champion opened with a +5, 77 for a share of the overnight lead with Lisheen Spring’s High Donnelly and was trailed by a number of players with pedigree just a couple of shots further back.
Cowley showed his grit and class though on Day 2 returning a +6, 78 for a two stroke winning margin over Donnelly with Birr’s Billy Donlon taking third following a best of the day +4, 76 in Round 2.

Ireland Through to Semi-Final, Cleary & Mitchell Win
Cork’s Tom Cleary partnered John Mitchell (Tramore) in the quarter final of the European Senior Mens Team Championship an the pair racked up a 4&3 in their match against Switzerland. Maurice Kelly and Adrian Morrow clocked up two singles wins as Ireland advanced into the semi-final. Ireland finished the 36 hole qualifying phase 24 shots clear of the nearest challenger, taking the top seed spot by a considerable margin.

Cleary Shoots 69 for Irish 1-2-3 :: European Senior Men’s Team Championship Day 2

Tom Cleary (Cork Golf Club) shot a second round 69 to jump up to second place in the European Seniors Team Championship in Bulgaria. Cleary was one of three Irish players in the 60’s as they claimed 1st, 2nd & 3rd places on
Cleary had five birdies and three bogies in his three under par round, and is second in a field of over 120 European golfers. Arthur Pierce matched Cleary’s score to lead the qualifying part of the competition on -6. Bangor’s Gareth McGimpsey is also on -4 after shooting a 71 and Adrian Morrow shot the low round of the day (68) in a 12 shot swing from the first round.
No details for tomorrow’s draw is available yet.
Boland 4th in Irish Under 16 Boys Championship
Mitchelstown’s Adam Boland shot a final round 73 to claim fourth spot in the Irish Under 16 Boys which was held at The Heath.
Boland’s third round was an other improvement on his previous round, beating his second round score by a shot. Although a win was unlikely, Boland was unlucky to drop three shots on the run in, otherwise he could have claimed the runners-up spot. Despite that, Boland still added four birdies in the high-pressure final round. Mallow’s Ed Walsh had a tough start to the final round, he was eight over after nine holes and 10 over after 11 hole in a very uncharacteristic round. He steadied himself on the way hole and parred the final seven holes, he finished in 34th position was the only other Cork golfer to make the cut.
Monkstown win in Douglas
Monkstown Golf Club took the spoils at the Doulgas Officers Charity Day on Friday, they scored 89 points to beat a large field and calim the historic Douglas Am-Am Trophy

4th: Ed Kenny, Dave Kenny, Tony Keegan, Shane Hartnett (Kenny Jewellers)
Tom Cleary 5th in European Seniors Team Championship
A one under par round of saw Cork’s Tom Cleary finish in fifth place after the first round of the European Senior Men’s Team Championships. The competition is being held in Bulgaria at the Pravets Golf Club
Cleary got off to a great start with birdies on the 1st, 5th & 7th, although he did drop a shot on the 6th which saw him go out in -2. He added another birdie on the 13th but two late bogies pegged him back to -1 and he’s in a seven way tie for fifth place. Ireland performed very well overall, Arthur Pierce and Gareth McGimpsey both shot 69 to tie for second place and Maurice Kelly is one shot behind Cleary in 12th place. John Mitchell and Adrian Morrow both had poor rounds today but have every chance of recovering tomorrow in the second round.
Cork has dual interest in the action in Bulgaria as Mahon’s Sean O’Leary is the Irish Team Captain. After tomorrow’s round, all 20 teams will enter the matchplay phase which takes place over three days.
Monkstown’s Dunlea 3rd at Beaverstown Pro-Am
Newly relocated Graeme Dunlea shot a four under par 68 at the Beaverstown Pro-Am in Dublin yesterday. He finished in a tie for 3rd place behind joint winners Damien Mooney and Richard Kilpatrick. Dunlea had five birdies in his round with the only bogey coming on the 13th when he was 4 under. He recovered with a birdie two on the 17th to sign for a 68.

McCarthy takes 4th place at Irish Youths
Paul McCarthy shot a final round 70 to move up the leaderboard to 4th place at the Irish Youths in Moyola Park. McCarthy from Mallow had five birdies and four bogies to finish his day on one under and +2 for the tournament.
A final round 76 from Kinsale’s John Murphy saw him head in the other direction, he dropped out of the top ten and finished in 16th place. Timmy Broderick also shot a 76 to finish just inside the top 30 on +9 for the tournament. Continue reading
Desmond wins Bruen Youths in Muskerry

Monkstown’s Sean Desmond won the Bruen Youths in Muskerry on Monday, rounding off an impressive year for the scratch golfer. Desmond was a key part of Monkstown Senior Cup team this season and the impressive young golfer has had a share of disappointments in the last few weeks. He was part of two Monkstown teams that narrowly lost out in Munster finals in the AIG Senior Cup and in the Junior Foursomes. He also had a good run in the Kerry Boys in Ballybunion before going out at the semi-final stage. On Monday he led a field of fifty golfers to win the prestigious youths title which has taken place for each of the past 30 years. In the morning he led the first round with a level par 71, tied with Muskerry’s James O’Connor. Birdies on the 1st, 7th and 9th helped Desmond build his score. Three more birdies followed in the second round, all on the front nine again. A double bogey on the 13th in the afternoon was the only real blemish on a very solid 36 holes.
