Muskerry’s Ronan Twomey won the first major competition of the year when he scooped the TopGolfer Senior Scratch Cup at Fota Island on Sunday. The full timesheet featured almost 120 gofers as they all took to the famous Irish Open Deerpark course. The course was in great condition although it was a bitterly cold morning. The scoring was going to be tough for the high class field. The championship tees were in play and the greens offered up some very tricky pins. No golfer managed to break par or even match it, and only two golfers posted a one over 73. Continue reading

Change may be on the cards for Lisselan but it’s business as usual for the nine hole course and thriving club. The Blackburn family who have owned the estate for the past 25 years put the property up for sale but hopes are high that the course and club will remain. Lisselan golf course celebrates 21 years in existence this year and the nine hole course has a quirky history. Owner of the estate, David Blackburn and his family came to Lisselan 25 years ago and soon the idea of a golf course took hold. Planning difficulties resulted in only six holes being developed, mainly along the banks of the Argideen river in front of Lisselan House. Christy O’Connor Snr was on hand in 1994 to officially open the course and despite being a fairly unique 6 hole course, it did rank in the top ten of in Golf Fore Magazine’s 1,200 courses reviewed. It’s timely of course to remember that Lisselan wasn’t only about golf, 19 years ago Lisselan’s Imperial Call was the toast of Ireland as he romped home to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Ryan wins in Youghal – Munster PGA

Cahir Park’s David Ryan won his second event in the PGB Munster Winter Series as he won the Captain’s Prize in Youghal. Ryan shot a winning one under par 70. He held off a trio from Kerry as Danny Sugrue (Killarney), David Higgins (Waterville) and Liam Higgins (Waterville) all finished with 71. Christian Porter (Halpenny Golf) was fifth with a 72 and Cian McNamara (Monkstown) was next best with a 73. Although it was an impressive performance from Ryan, the story of the day was the second placed finish by Liam Higgins. The veteran from Waterville shot a 71, bettering his age by one at the Taylormade sponsored event. In a nice touch Liam told his assembled peers that Youghal was the first club he joined in 1963. Top Golfers Head for Muskerry

64 of Cork’s top golfers will head into battle in Muskerry tomorrow, all in search of the Ford Junior Scratch Trophy. The 64 golfers have come through from two full days of strokeplay qualifying held in Muskerry last month, and the eventual winner will have to come through six matches over the next three days to add his name to the prestigious trophy. The matchplay element starts on Good Friday at 8am, and with two rounds taking place each day, the winner will eventually be known on Sunday afternoon. The competitive format is unique in Munster and has attracted golfers from all over the county and beyond. With a handicap limit of 5, the event provides a mix between the established Junior Cup and Bruen golfers, and younger golfers heading for Barton or Senior Cup appearances. Continue reading
Skibbereen Offer for New Golfers
Skibbereen & West Carbery Golf Club have launched a new membership scheme which should prove very attractive to many of Cork’s golfers. They are set to take advantage of a new handicapping rule, they have just launched an innovative club membership scheme with an annual cost of just €175. New rules which come in from the 1st March mean that golfers can only play in qualifying competitions outside of their home club only if they have three qualifying rounds in their home club in the previous 12 months. This has the potential to disrupt many of those golfers who hold distance memberships in clubs outside Cork, especially those who play most of their golf in local open competitions while not playing in their home course. The €175 membership option includes three rounds of golf to comply with the handicapping rules. Continue reading
Quinlivan Wins Munster PGA Event
There was local success in the Munster PGA winter series as Mike Quinlivan won in the Cobra Singles in Dromoland Castle last week. The Rathbane based PGA Professional shot a three under par 69 to win the event by a single shot. Fernhill’s Wayne O’Callaghan was second with 70 and Monkstown’s Cian McNamara was third with a 71.
