Paul McCarthy wins Munster Youths

Paul McCarthy made it two from two for Mallow Golf Club when he captured the Munster Youths Trophy today in Tralee Golf Club.  He followed in the footsteps of his Fred Daly and Junior Foursomes team mate James Sugrue in capturing the prestigious title.  The 20 year old was competing in the tournament for the final time and he was two shots behind Bray’s Alan Fahy an Dun Laoghaire’s Conor Ryan going in to the final round.  A solid level par 70 was enough to move him clear of the field.  It wasn’t plain sailing however on the testing links.  McCarthy was three over after 10 but he added birdies at 12, 14 and 16 to rebuild his challenge and secure his winning total of 215 for the three rounds.  Kinsale golfers Cathal Butler and Gary Ward both finished on 225, just outside the top ten.  Youghal’s Conor Coyne was just outside the top twenty.

The strokeplay qualifiers for the Irish Junior Foursomes took place over the weekend with four Cork clubs hosting.  The top two teams from each venue qualified for the next stage.

THE European Tour has teamed up with the Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI) to launch the first ever Irish Open Golf Skills Challenge which is designed to help young golfers, under the age of 15, focus on the key skills of the game.  The winners of the all-Ireland competition will have an opportunity to go to the Pro-Am at this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open hosted by the Rory Foundation at Royal County Down where they can watch the players practice and meet some of the world’s top golfers.   Continue reading →

Whyte Wins in Waterville – Munster PGA

Frankfield’s David Whyte made a return to the winners circle on Monday as he shared the top spot in the William Rushby Waterville Pro-Am.  Whyte shot a leading 73 and was matched by Waterville’s own David Higgins and Killarney’s Daniel Sugrue.  The event was sponsored by Bill Rushby and as part of the pot, a Volvo V40 was on offer for anyone who aced the par three 4th hole.  Continue reading →

Twomey wins Season Opener in Fota

Muskerry’s Ronan Twomey won the first major competition of the year when he scooped the TopGolfer Senior Scratch Cup at Fota Island on Sunday.  The full timesheet featured almost 120 gofers as they all took to the famous Irish Open Deerpark course.  The course was in great condition although it was a bitterly cold morning.  The scoring was going to be tough for the high class field.  The championship tees were in play and the greens offered up some very tricky pins.  No golfer managed to break par or even match it, and only two golfers posted a one over 73.  Continue reading →

Change may be on the cards for Lisselan but it’s business as usual for the nine hole course and thriving club.  The Blackburn family who have owned the estate for the past 25 years put the property up for sale but hopes are high that the course and club will remain.  Lisselan golf course celebrates 21 years in existence this year and the nine hole course has a quirky history.  Owner of the estate, David Blackburn and his family came to Lisselan 25 years ago and soon the idea of a golf course took hold.  Planning difficulties resulted in only six holes being developed, mainly along the banks of the Argideen river in front of Lisselan House.  Christy O’Connor Snr was on hand in 1994 to officially open the course and despite being a fairly unique 6 hole course, it did rank in the top ten of in Golf Fore Magazine’s 1,200 courses reviewed.  It’s timely of course to remember that Lisselan wasn’t only about golf, 19 years ago Lisselan’s Imperial Call was the toast of Ireland as he romped home to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
