Sara Byrne is back in Cork, well temporarily at least as she moves on from finishing her four years on a golf scholarship in the US.  The two-time Irish champion has a busy summer ahead, with plans to turn professional in September.

Byrne spent the last four years in University of Miami, and came away with an accountancy and finance degree as well as much improved golf game.  The 22 year old was a double winner in NCAA Division 1 events in the past year, in addition to recording several top five and top ten finishes.

“The best four years of my life” is how the reigning Irish Close champion described her time in Miami.  “I went over there with a goal to get better and come out of college ready to turn pro and that’s exactly what happened.  Along the way I managed to make the best friends and have Continue reading

Karl Bornemann won the Munster Seniors in Kinsale last week, winning in dramatic fashion with a sudden death playoff win.  Bornemann, who has suffered with injuries for much of the past two seasons, saved his best golf for the end.  He birdied the 17th and 18th to force a playoff with David Mulholland, and he beat his fellow Irish International on the second playoff hole.

Bornemann led the tournament after the opening round on Wednesday, he was the only player to go under par posting a two under 70.  Two early birdies were offset by two dropped shots but an eagle on the last saw him hold the overnight lead by two strokes.

He battled on Thursday and crucially birdied the final two holes to reach a playoff Continue reading

Coughlan captures Munster Strokeplay

A top class field assembled in Cork Golf Club on Saturday, all hoping to take home the Cork Scratch Cup as the winner of the Munster Strokeplay Championship.  First played for in 1923, the cup has gone through a few different formats, and 72 holes would separate the field in this staging.  Cork was in great condition for the prestigious Munster Championship recovering quickly from the wet spring.

Holder Jason Law got the competition underway at 7.30 on Saturday as he was out I the first group.  The centenary winner took the winter off from golf and while he opened with a disappointing 79, he followed that with a 71 but missed the cut by two. Continue reading

Mairead Martin won the Cork Ladies Scratch Cup in style on Saturday, shooting two under par round to win by four strokes.  The Irish International has been in good form recently and that showed in the first wound when she shot a four under par 70.  Martin was delighted with her win, her second of the year.

I really like Cork Golf Club, funnily enough I hadn’t played it very much even being from Cork” said Mairead after her win.  “It’s a challenging course but definitely rewards good approach shots.”

“I played well in round 2, I knew it was important to keep the foot on the accelerator as you never know what can happen.  I started out well with Continue reading

“It feels really nice to know I had a little bit of pressure to Continue reading

Howard & O’Neill advance in the West

David Howard

There was plenty of Cork interest in the Connolly Motors West of Ireland last weekend with several local golfers in action.  This year the West returned to the traditional 36/64 format but it was preceded on Wednesday by a qualifier with 17 spots in the field available.  Fermoy’s Eoghan McCarthy was one of the golfers to make it through the qualifier, he shot an impressive one under par 70 to lead the field.  Unfortunately for McCarthy, a wrist injury prevented from teeing it up on Friday.  Ryan Lyons from Douglas also made it through the qualifier to earn a place in the championship. Conor Og Maddigan, Jack O’Flynn and Gavin Sloane missed out.

That left eight Cork golfers in the field for Friday, but by Monday morning there were just two left from the field of 120 golfers.  Just David Howard and Joe O’Neill made it through the first four rounds and unfortunately neither made it past the fifth round. The Douglas pair of Peter O’Keeffe and James Walsh both made the cut but lost in the first round as did Fermoy’s Dean O’Riordan.

Fota’s David Howard has a good history of playing golf on Easter Sunday, five years agon he won his final two matches to claim the Muskerry Junior Scratch Trophy.  And after qualifying he faced a tough test in the matchplay.  Howard was up against the Spanish Seniors champion Joe Lyons, and it was the veteran who had the better start when he ended up three up after nine holes.  Crucially Howard won four holes on the back nine, and a half on the 18th meant the match was headed for the 19th.  Both players parred the 19th, but Howard’s par on the 20th was enough to send him through to the second round.  The Fota Island member was back on the first tee on Sunday afternoon.  He faced Mark Cadden and it was the Roganstown member who won the first hole.  Howard balanced the card on the second and was one up at the turn.  He held onto that advantage and was two up with two to play when he won the 17th and advanced to the last 16.  Unfortunately that was the end of Howard’s journey, losing to Evan Farrell on Monday morning.

Howard was happy overall with his performance in the first event of the year.  “It was a good week overall, a lot of positives to take for the first one of the year so happy with it.  I was playing pretty good coming up to it, I went up to Laytown and Bettystown the week before and played decent up there” said David.  “I shot 69 in the final round so was that kind of confidence boost going into the West, playing my first round with a card in the hand in a while so I was happy enough going into it.”

“Last year was my first time playing in the West so this time I kind of had a good gauge of the place.  I just walked the course on Thursday and played four holes on Thursday evening just to get engaged and feel for the place.  It’s a really challenging course especially the final six holes.”  The approach paid dividends as Howard recorded his best championship finish.

Berehaven’s Joe O’Neill also had a good run in Co Sligo.  He made the top 64 after finishing on +10 for his 36 holes.  He had a very impressive 72 on the opening day to lie in the top twenty and although he had an 80 in the second round, he still qualified with two shots to spare.

In the first round he had an impressive 5&3 win over Ross Nelson, thanks in part to a blistering start.  O’Neill won the first four holes and despite losing a few on the front nine, he wrapped up the match on the 15th.

The Berehaven man who featured in the South last year was up against Thomas Abom, with his opponent playing the better golf on the front nine.  O’Neill was two down at the turn but he won the next three holes to take a lead in the match for the first time.  He held that lead and closed out the match on the 17th.

On Monday morning he faced Paul Coughlan and the match was a tight affair with never more than one hole separating the pair.  O’Neill had the lead on the 18th tee but at bogey on the last meant they were onto the 19th.  The next two holes were halved but Coughlan’s birdie on the 21st (3rd) meant his West adventure was over.

Irish Mens Debut for Jack Murphy

Jack Murphy

Jack Murphy is making his Irish Men’s debut this week, the teenager was selected on the Irish team that is taking in the Octagonal Tournament in Spain.  The tournament features eight European countries, with Ireland set to compete against England, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain.  The eight competing teams will be drawn into two groups of four, which will be decided by a lottery during the team presentation ceremony. Each match will have three foursomes matches in the morning and six singles in the afternoon.  Once the round robin has concluded, the two groups will compete with each other according to their group position to determine their overall tournament finish.

Murphy’s selection should be no surprise given his form.  Last year was another very positive year for the Douglas golfer.  Early in 2023 he committed to Washington College after getting a scholarship offer from the Division 1 college.  Once the season started won the Connacht and Munster Continue reading

No joy for Cork clubs at inter-club finals

The final weekend of AIG Inter-Club All-Ireland finals took place in Westport over the week with five competitions down for decision.  It was the third weekend of events and it saw Cork clubs still looking for their first green pennant of the 2023 campaign.  Quarter-finals had taken place already in these events, and that meant the there were just two Cork teams in action from the five competitions.  Lee Valley had qualified from Munster East in the Women’s Minor Cup, the Cork club have a good record in the ladies cups events and they saw off the challenge from Rockmount in the semi-final on Thursday.  Impressive wins for Emma O’Halloran, Dinah O’Mahony and Joesphine Martin saw them through to the final on Continue reading
