Fionn Hickey won another title today, he scooped the Under 17 Trophy at the Irish Boys in New Forest today. Hickey had a disappointing 78 yesterday, but he bounced back today with a very steady level par round of 72. A birdie 4th hole saw him turn on one under, but two bogies on the back nine saw him move from the red to +1. Another birdie on the 16th, followed by two closing pars saw him return to level, on a four round total of 292 (+4). That was just two shots behind the overall Irish Boys winner, Aaron Marshall from Lisburn. It was another positive weeks for Fionn, the four rounds of 72, 70, 78, 72 will mean another handicap cut for the Muskerry golfer who is currently playing off scratch. Monkstown’s Sean Desmond won the Munster Students title in Tipperary today, holding onto his second round lead.
Sean Desmond has the 36 hole lead at the Munster Students Amateur Open. After torrential rain yesterday, golfers benefitted from dry fine weather today in Tipperary Golf Club. Desmond opened with a three over par 75, but came back this afternoon with a three under par 69 to finish on level par. He was three under through 12 holes but a bogey on the 14th set him back. A bridie on the 16th got him back to level and he parred the final two holes to hold the overnight lead. John Cleary (Elm Park) is just one off the lead, and John Bolger (Courtown) is two shots back. Paul Conroy and Harry Duggan are in 4th place on +3 while Kinsale’s Gary Ward is 6th. Duggan (Kilkenny) held the 18 hole lead after an opening 72, but he drifted back to 4th after a second round 75.
Mahon and Bandon were the two big winners over the weekend as they came through the first serious weekend of cups and shields action. Monkstown and Blarney were the host venues for the AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield qualifiers, with fine weather and great conditions adding to the spectacle of matchplay golf. All Ireland winners Kinsale were not in the shake up this time, they lost out to Skibbereen in a first round match the previous weekend. Mahon had also come through a preliminary match the previous week, they had a comprehensive win over Mallow in the first round to set up a meeting with Douglas on Saturday morning. Similar to their previous form, Mahon had a good win over Douglas but they faced a stiff challenge again Cork in the third round and two matches would need additional holes for Mahon to advance.
