Many golfers are known for an almost unhealthy obsession with equipment.   From drivers to wedges and putters, from shafts to grips, golfers are always interested in the latest developments and technology, anything that will help their game.  While the majority of spectators in Fota this week will have their eyes on the course, a few will spend some time on the range watching the golfers and their equipment.  The tour trucks will be in Fota too, providing technical assistance, replacement equipment and minor or major adjustments for anyone of the 156 professional golfers needing a last minute fix.  With a total of €2m on offer in Continue reading

The Munster Strokeplay took place in Cork Golf Club over the weekend and all 75 golfers were challenged by both the weather and the course.  A new name was added to the trophy as Royal Dublin’s Barry Anderson won the title by a single stroke.  Although the weather was a disappointment to both golfers and spectators, the course was very well received by all the competitors.  The perfect fairways and slick greens provided Ireland’s top amateurs with a challenge, as did the punishing rough.  At the halfway point of the 72 hole competition, Dundalk’s Aaron Grant.  Local hopes rested with Cork John Hickey who was just one shot off the lead.   Mark Shanahan, Dave O’Donovan and Eoghan Murphy were all in the hunt and Gary O’Flaherty was also in touching distance although he was six shots back.  Holder Kieran McCarthy missed the cut, a 79 followed by an 82 saw him finish five shots outside the cut mark. Hickey claims top spot in Muskerry

By Niall O’Shea

Cork’s John Hickey won the Muskerry Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday with an excellent two under par score for his two rounds.  The young Cork golfer took the title by one stroke from the field.  There was a full field and waiting list assembled on Saturday morning as 70 of Cork’s top golfers too to the course.  Hickey along with Lee Valley’s Pat Power led the first round with a two under par 69.   Gary O’Flaherty and Cathal Butler were one shot off the lead while Keith Crowley was next on 72.  Scoring was slightly tougher for the second round with Fota’s Sean Barry posting a 69. Shanahan Takes First Title of 2014

Castlemartyr’s Mark Shanahan won the opening event of the new season when he captured the Top Golfer Fota Senior Scratch Cup on Sunday.  Shanahan shot a two under par 69 to lead a field of over 110 golfers.  Fota’s Sean Barry was second with a 70, Barry was the only other golfer to shoot a sub-par round.  Castlemartyr had two golfers in the top three, John O’Brien fresh from his attempt to gain access to the European Seniors Tour was third with two over par 73.  Eoghan Murphy, Ciaran McKenna and Brian Kelleher were among the golfers to finish on 74.  This was Shanahan’s first win in Fota but it was his third win in a Top Golfer competition.  The Waterford man, currently playing off +2 won previous events at Dromoland in 2012 and Bunclody in 2013.  The Top Golfer tour is now in its fifth year and this season, all event winners will go forward to the series final in Portmarnock.  The tour is comprised of junior and senior scratch cups throughout the country.  The next visit to Cork happens in May when the Lee Valley Junior Scratch Cup takes place.  The last Cork event takes place in Cork Golf Club (Junior Scratch Cup) in July.

Bernard Rohan from East Cork won last week’s Irish Open Pro-Am qualifier in Fota.  Rohan will be joined in the series final by Cillian Moloney (Fota) and Michael O’Donoghue (Gold Coast), the top three scored 40 points.  The qualifier continues every Wednesday until the end of April, with the top three finalists winning a place in the Irish Open Pro-Am.  Mallow Golf Club tasted international success last week as their Fred Daly team won the prestigious Home Nations Trophy.  Playing against teams from Ireland, England Wales and Scotland, they made it through to the final where they played Belvoir Park.  A 6-0 victory followed that saw the progressive North Cork club take the title for the first time.

Next Saturday will see Muskerry host their first major event of the season when they stage the Senior Scratch Cup.  The competition will be played over 36 holes with the draw for partners and starting holes has been made and will be available tomorrow.  The competition starts at 8.30am on Saturday.  The qualifiers for the Ford Muskerry Junior Scratch Trophy will take on the 4th & 5th of April, the time sheet is now opens next week and it’s likely the popular competition will be fully booked.  The qualifiers will go on compete in Munster’s toughest matchplay competition over the Easter weekend as the 64 hopefuls will be whittled down over six challenging rounds.  Anyone interested in a competitive practice round should consider the open singles in Muskerry on Sunday, entry is €25 and there are still some places on the timesheet.

Golf Rules Always to the Fore

Rory McIlroy hit the headlines over the weekend over his reaction to an incident regarding the rules of golf.  He suffered a two shot penalty for an incorrect drop, a penalty that ultimately had a big bearing on his second place finish.  McIlroy was penalised for standing on the boundary of an obstruction, in this case a spectator crossing point on the fairway.  Local PGA professional Padraig Dooley however had a different take and defended the rules of the game, many of which have endured over time.

Padraig from Drive Golf Performance has taken the PGA Advanced Rules and Refereeing course is well placed to give an opinion on the rules of golf.  He explained: “The requirement to take full relief from an immovable obstruction or abnormal ground conditions is far from stupid.  Both Rules 24 & 25 allow for relief from the conditions if it interferes with not only the ball but the stance and area of intended swing as well.  If there wasn’t a requirement to take full relief, the player by not taking full relief could drop and if not liking the lie could re-drop as many times as required to get a good lie as the player would always be entitled to relief.  This isn’t really a stupid rule.”  McIlroy had commented that “There are a lot of stupid rules in golf and this is one of them”.  While Dooley spends most of his time teaching, his is acutely aware of the importance of the rules and the influence they have in every game “all the rules of golf are well thought out and have a lot of history and cases behind them, none can be called stupid”.

While many golfers think that the Rules of Golf are complex, the Glanimre based teaching professional doesn’t agree; “A very good working knowledge of the rules doesn’t take too long to grasp.  There are 34 rules, it might take 15 minutes to get reacquainted with each of them.  An hour each evening in the winter months will mean it just takes over a week to get a great deal of the knowledge that will help every player.”  It should also be noted that the Rules of Golf booklet can be downloaded for free from the R&A website.

Working from their own extensive facility in Riverstown, Padraig and his brother John have built a large customer base in under two years.  In addition to lessons, also offer junior lessons, custom fitting and golf fitness programmes.  Padraig is a qualified junior golf and golf fitness coach, both qualifications coming from the renouned Titleist Performance Institute.  Padraig’s final bit of advice is “Why not grab a rule book while watching the TV and during the ad breaks, read a rule, you never know when it might save you a stroke or two.”
