There was great excitement in Douglas on Sunday evening as Fota Island overcame Mahon in an exciting Fred Daly Trophy quarter-final match.  The match was a repeat of last year’s competition when Mahon came out on top.  The course in Douglas was in great condition for the match although heavy rain and strong winds during the first hour of play hampered the golfers.  Heading into the back nine the match was very balanced with neither side having a strong advantage in any of the seven matches. 73rd William Dwyer Trophy

“The Lada Tour” Golf Society, winners of the 2009 William Dwyer Trophy

The 73rd staging of the William Dwyer Inter-Society Trophy gets underway next week.  Two qualifying days take place in Mahon Golf Club, with the first one taking place next week. 18 societies are listed this year, with the top four from each day qualifying for the final.  The format is foursomes with the best three cards counting from the four pairs.

The competition is Ireland’s oldest inter-society event and was started in 1942 by the Cork family famous for textiles.  Mahon’s Finbarr O’Callaghan has been running the competition for several years and ensures that’s Cork’s most famous and unique golf trophy continues it’s proud tradition. Third win for Cork’s Cleary – Munster Seniors Amateur Open 2015

Tom Cleary (Cork Golf Club) retained his Munster Seniors Amateur Open title.  On a day when the wind played a significant part in the story, Cleary shot the low round of the day to overhaul a two shot deficit from overnight leader, Tramore’s John Mitchell.

Cleary’s three over par 75 was the low round of the day, which was affected by 30 mph gusts sweeping through the links course.   Four bogies and a double on the opening nine threatened the holder’s chances but these were offset by two birdies for an outward total of 39.  Cleary bogeyed the difficult 10th and 11th, both playing into the stiff wind.  Birdies at 13, 14 and the par five 18th brought him back in a one under par 36 and a total of 75 strokes for the day.  His winning total of 149 (+5) gave him a two stroke margin of victory.
