Sunday started with high hopes for plenty of golfers, O’Donovan, O’Brien and Gorey were all in contention at the Irish Mid-Am in New Forrest.  Cian McNamara and Wayne O’Callaghan were in the top 10 in the Shell Carne Pro-Am and Fernhill were due to take on Blarney in the first round of the Barton Shield at Muskerry. O’Donovan and Griffin selected on Munster Team

Dave O’Donovan (Muskerry) has been selected on the Munster Senior Inter-Provincial team, and his selection was warmly welcomed by many who feel it’s a well deserved reward for his good play in 2015.  O’Donovan had a very strong start to the season and won the prestigious Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup in April.  Although he was limited to only a few order of merit events, Munster Captain Phil Cooney obviously liked what he saw when he watched O’Donovan in Lee Valley and later in Cork GC at the Munster Strokeplay.  A happy Dave said: “I’m thrilled to bits obviously.  Dues to a few family occasions I couldn’t play as much as I would have liked to in May.  But I played well in Shannon and the Munster Strokeplay and the game it still good”.  O’Donovan along with the team and management will aim to retain their title in Rossapena (Donegal) in early July.   Continue reading

O’Flaherty and Hickey set for Cork Challenge

The top golfers from Cork, Munster and Ireland will gather in Cork Golf Club on Saturday morning for the 72 hole Munster Strokeplay Championship.  Now in its tenth year, the Munster Strokeplay took the place of the Cork Scratch Cup which was the oldest competition of its type in the country.  In the past decade the competition has attracted a top class field and this year two thirds of the field are playing off a plus handicap. O’Donovan Leads in Lee Valley

Dave O’Donovan (Muskerry) leads the Lee Valley Mardyke Arena Senior Scratch Cup by three strokes going in to the final round.  O’Donovan was the only golfer to break par in over 120 rounds of golf.  His opening two under par 70 was followed by a 74, leaving him on a level par total of 144 for the two rounds. Gary O’Flaherty is the closest contender, he’s three shots back.  He bettered his opening 74 with a 73 in the afternoon.  O’Flaherty’s 73 was one of the low rounds of the afternoon an the wind and rain passed through the Clashure course.  John Hickey (Cork) and Blane Lynch (Ballinrobe) are also within three of the lead on 147. Muskerry March on to win Barton Shield

Muskerry Golf Club bridged a 61 year gap yesterday when they won the AIG Barton Shield.  There hasn’t been a Cork winner for over 20 years, so it is a huge achievement for the players to go all the way and win the prestigious national title.  Huge numbers turned out at the club last night as the victorious team returned home with the trophy.  Continue reading
