High Hopes for 2017
After a poor start, 2016 seemed to behave itself, so it’s fair to say that everyone is hoping for more of the same in 2017. Last year will be year that is remembered as the year when membership and revenues stabilised. While that was positive for clubs, it was also very positive for courses. After six years of falling membership it was a relief for the industry and the recovery has started.
On course, 2016 had a very slow start with record rain-fall levels meaning that there was no play until late February. After that though the season got underway pretty quickly, and the mild weather in the past three months has allowed clubs to catch up on the slow start.
The signs from clubs and courses are that they have moved from neutral to positive, with almost everyone driving on with their development plans. Fota Island Academy have launched a new membership scheme which transforms the previous model, Lee Valley invested heavily in machinery and course inputs, as did many other clubs. Cobh led the way with nine hole open competitions and Skibbereen offered an innovative pay and pay membership option. Castlemartyr face into the new year after adding over 100 new Continue reading

Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty shot the low round of the afternoon to take a two stroke lead into the second day of the Munster Strokeplay Championship. Muskerry Aiming for Back to Back Barton Shield Titles

Muskerry make the almost familiar trip back to Carton House next week with high hopes of creating history with their AIG Barton Shield Team. Having beaten four teams in South Munster, they racked up another two wins at the Munster finals stage to book their place in the national finals. Now they are just two matches away from back to back wins in one of golf’s most prestigious national competitions. They head off to Carton House with a settled team featuring just one change from last year. The experienced John Waldron has stepped down and that has given an opportunity to someone else to step up and join the winning team. Third win for Cork’s Cleary – Munster Seniors Amateur Open 2015

Tom Cleary (Cork Golf Club) retained his Munster Seniors Amateur Open title. On a day when the wind played a significant part in the story, Cleary shot the low round of the day to overhaul a two shot deficit from overnight leader, Tramore’s John Mitchell.

Shaun Carter from The Royal Dublin won the Munster Strokeplay with a four under par total 140 for the weather affected 36 hole Championship. Rosslare’s Paul Murphy and Castlemartyr’s Mark Shanahan both recorded second round 68’s to take second and third place respectively on two under par 142. Continue reading
