Murphy & Power win GB&I’s first Walker Cup Point

John Murphy and Mark Power came from behind to win the first point for GB&I this afternoon in the opening session of the Walker Cup.  Playing at a windy Seminole Golf Club on the Atlantic coast in Florida, the pair only took the lead on the 17th, and a measured two putt on the final green saw the pair claim the point in the morning foursomes.  The two Irish players were paired together, while it was expected both teams were hit by illness earlier in the week and it was unclear who would be fit to play today.

Needless to day Murphy was still on a high when it came to his post round interview with the Golf Channel, and he explained how they dealt with the pressure of being three down on two occasions.  “I said to Mark both times we’re playing great, we’ve got to stick to what we’re doing.  We got a couple of bad breaks early on but lets not try and force anything, this is a golf course for mistakes and we’ll let them make the mistakes.  We stuck to our gameplan very well and stayed patient.”

Power too was delighted with the result and credited Murphy with some solid advice early in the round, “The old head here calmed me down today, he said just hit fairways and hit greens and we’ll wear these guys down.”  Playing a Walker Cup match with a fellow Irishman was a real treat for both Murphy & Power and the Kilkenny man did a great job of describing it.

“It’s amazing.  We were talking about it this week, we played Home Internationals together, played together when we were 15 and 16.  On the first tee we said we were just going to just going to enjoy today and embrace it.”

It was a day of comebacks for GB&I.  At one stage they were 4-0 down on the course but when the last match finished it was 2-2 on the scoreboard.

Both Irish golfers are back in action this evening in the opening singles.  Power is out second against Davis Thompson while Murphy has the anchor spot on the team and will face world No 18 Cole Hammer.  They tee off at 8.47pm (Irish time) with coverage continuing on Sky Sports and the Golf Channel.

Top ten for Murphy in US Season Opener

South of Ireland 2019

John Murphy

John Murphy opened his 2019/20 college season with a flourish last weekend, scooping a top ten finish in the opening tournament of the year.  Murphy shot rounds of 71, 66, 76 in the Roy Myers Invitational which took place at Duke University.  Four birdies and three bogies made up Murphy’s opening round on Saturday morning, and later that day he returned a blistering 66 which tied the lowest score of the tournament.  The 66 got off to a steady start, the Louisville golfer was level par after four with two birdies and two bogies.  A birdie four on the ninth saw him turn on one under.  He had a hot hand on the back nine though, he was five under for the five holes from the 11th to the 15th.  That included three birdies and an eagle as he finished the back nine with three pars to sign for a six under score.

That 66 in the second round saw Murphy lead the event going Continue reading

McLarnon tames Lee Valley

Tiarnan McLarnon, the Boylesports Lee Valley Scratch Cup winner 2019

It was a weekend that started with Storm Hannah, but it finished with Storm Tiarnan as the Massereene golfer put manners on both the course and the field at the Boylesports Lee Valley Scratch Cup.  It was a wire to wire win for the Antrim golfer, after an opening 73 which put him in the lead, he set a course record on Saturday afternoon with a six under par 66.  Going into the final round he had a four shot lead, that meant he just needed to keep pace with second placed Ronan Mullarney.  The Irish International went on the attack again though and closed with a three under par 69 to extend his lead and win by a clear margin of seven strokes.  The 16th hole summed up the weekend for McLarnon, after missing the green he chipped in for birdie.  That effectively sealed his win, and after two regulation pars on 17 and 18 he smiled to crowd to acknowledge his first win in Lee Valley.  While Tiarnan led from the front, the chasers didn’t Continue reading

Sugrue & Murphy included in Walker Cup Squad

South of Ireland 2018Lahinch Golf Club Saturday 28th July 2018

James Sugrue in action in the South of Ireland last year

James Sugrue and John Murphy were today named on a 26 man extended panel for the Walker Cup, and both will be hoping for a good summer of golf to boost their chances of making the ten man team for September.  The Walker Cup takes place in Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) later this year, and both will hope to follow in the footsteps of John McHenry (1987) and Jimmy Bruen (1938/49/51) in making the final team.  Mallow’s Sugrue (22) was disappointed two weeks ago when he had to withdraw from the European Nations Cup due to injury.  Now he’s back at full strength he’ll be looking forward to the squad practice in Hoylake next week prior to playing in the Lytham Trophy the following weekend.  Kinsale’s John Murphy (20) is currently in Kentucky with Continue reading

Sugrue in 5th place entering final day at SA Strokeplay

Munster Strokeplay Championship
Cork Golf Club
Sunday 6th May 2018It was another solid performance from Mallow’s James Sugrue yesterday as he carded a one under par 71 at the third round of the South African Strokeplay Championship.  After earlier rounds of -5 and -3, yesterday’s one under was more modest, but he maintained his position on the leaderboard.  Two bogies and three birdies meant that Sugrue finished on -1 and an aggregate of -9 for his 54 holes.

Sugrue is now seven shots off the lead, meaning a win is probably out of reach, but a top ten finish will add to Sugrue’s very positive start to the season and it will have a positive impact on his WAGR ranking.  He’s also the best of the strong Continue reading

Sugrue best of the Irish – Day 1 South African Strokeplay

AIG Senior Cup Area Semi Finals 2018
Cork Golf Club
Sunday 24th June 2018

James Sugrue had another good start to a tournament when he shot a 5 under par round on the first day of the Southern African Amateur Strokeplay.  Although an opening birdie was followed by a bogey, Sugrue was back in the red on -3 at the turn. He added another three birdies on the second nine but a bogey on his final hole meant that he signed for 5 under to finish best of the Irish in fourth place. That score leaves him just one shot off the lead which is held by three golfers.

Rob Brazill was the next best of the Irish, finishing the top ten. He had a memorable ace on the par three 16th, but unfortunately for Rob he had a triple bogey 8 on the next hole.  Ronan Mullarney, Mark Power and Conor Purcell are Continue reading
