Jack Murphy scores a top ten finish in California

Jack Murphy got his 2025 off in good fashion last week with a top ten performance in his first event of the new year.  Murphy closed the 54 hole Southwestern Invitational in California with an impressive four under par 67, which included five birdies after an early bogey.  After an opening 74, Murphy scored his first under par round of the year with a 70 in the second round. He bettered that again on Wednesday with his 67.

Jack’s head coach Alan Murray was delighted with the performance.  “Jack played sensational and to be so competitive in a field this strong is something that should give him huge confidence and self-belief,” Murray said.  “His four-under round today was one of the most impressive rounds I have seen from a college player. 2023 in Review

2023 was another great year for golf in Cork.  It didn’t hit some of the highs of previous years but there was a lot of success.  There was just one national title added to the honour roll in 2023, that was when Sara Byrne won the AIG Irish Women’s Close in Connemara in June.

It was a second win for Sara, particularly impressive when you consider she’s only 21.  She previously won in 2017 in Enniscrone, three years before she headed off to University of Miami.  The win this year in Continue reading →

Mark Healy, the Tusculum Pioneer

Mark Healy’s journey to Tennessee started out as a college student and while the journey isn’t over, Mark is now director of the golf programme he was playing in just two years ago.  Healy first went to Tennessee in 2019 after finishing his Leaving Certificate in Hamilton High School.  Although it was Covid interrupted, Mark played for three years on the golf team, racking up a few top twenty results for the Division 2 college.

In addition to his golf exploits, Mark also secured a degree in economics.  And when he decided to stay on to pursue a post graduate degree, he took on a role of associate coach with the golf Continue reading →

Impressive US Debut for Cain

Cork duo Morgan Cain and Mark Healy were part of a win in the US last week when their college team Tusculum Pioneers won the King University Invitational.  Healy is in his first year as Director of Golf Operations while Cain joined the Pioneers as a student freshman in August.

Morgan Cain was playing in his first NCAA event and he led the competition after day one thanks to a four under par round.  Cain posted five birdies on the opening round including three on his outward nine for a 32.  He moved his score to -4 with a birdie on the 13th before surrendering a bogey on the 16th. He bounced back with a birdie on 17 and would end the day with a par on the final hole for his opening 66.  He got off to a rocky start in the second round as he went out with a 38, but shot three-under par 32 for his final nine holes of Continue reading →

Cork Women win second Pennant, Bruen in Cobh, Mullingar Round Up

Ten Cork golfers advance at the South

Cork golfers had some impressive performances at the South of Ireland last week with ten golfers making the cut.  Dean O’Riordan, Joe O’Neill and Robert Walsh all made it through on the cut mark of +6 while Mel Deasy was one better on +5.

Peter O’Keeffe was just one off the leading qualifier on -5 and Morgan Cain was the only other Cork player under par on -2.  Former South Champion Sean Desmond went safely through on +1 with James Walsh continuing his good run of form to finish in the top 20.  Munster Strokeplay winner Jason Law also made Continue reading →

Morgan Cain and Stephen Riordan in UAE golf action

Morgan Cain and Stephen Riordan were in the United Arab Emirates last week, the Cork pair were taking part in the Faldo Series Grand final which saw close to 60 golfers from over 20 countries take part in the 54-hole event.  The Cork lads qualified for the final back in August in Luttrellstown Castle and along with Lauren Kelly book their place at Al Ain.  Morgan Cain from Cork Golf Club finished in 5th place, on 7 under par for his three rounds.

Cain Claims Munster Boys Title

Morgan Cain is the 2021 Munster Boys champion after a super display of golf in Nenagh.  The Cork golfer finished on -7, three shots clear of Douglas’ Mel Deasy to claim his first major title.

Three under par rounds of 71, 68, 70 saw him come home with plenty to spare.  Cain was tied for the lead with Deasy starting today’s final round, and started in the worst possible fashion with a double bogey on the opening hole.  But he battled back brilliantly with birdies in three of his next four holes to retake the lead from Deasy on the fifth.  It was a lead he wouldn’t surrender, with another two birdies on the back nine.
