Top 64 set for Ford Muskerry Junior Scratch Trophy

CGN Ford JST 16th Apr 2017-68Cork’s most demanding golf event is all set to start next week when 64 golfers will aim to make it through six rounds of matchplay golf.  The eventual winner will become the Ford Muskerry Junior Scratch Trophy champion.  While many golfers will be looking forward to morning off on Easter Sunday, the four semi-finalists will be facing into their fifth game of golf in three days, and all four will be hoping to reach a sixth game in the afternoon final.  Almost two weeks ago, over 250 competitors took part in the two-day qualifier in Muskerry, all hoping to finish in the top 64 and get through to the matchplay stage.  With a new handicap limit of 4, the event provides a mix between the established Junior Cup and Bruen golfers, and younger golfers heading for Barton or Senior Cup appearances.  Fota Island’s Anthony O’Connell led the qualifiers with a very impressive nett 57 for his 16 hole qualifier.  John McSweeney (Muskerry) led four golfers to finished with 58 in the first day of the qualifier.  Monkstown’s Billy Egan finished on top of the leaderboard on the second day.  He shot the best of the 58’s around the 16 hole course while Seamus Spencer (Berehaven) and David O’Brien (Cahir Park) also finished on 58.  Main sponsors Ford have been involved in the competition since 1992, continuing a long tradition of supporting amateur golf in Cork.  The trophy holds the names of many popular Cork golfers, including two previous Continue reading

Skibbereen win Munster Mixed Foursomes

Skibbereen Munster Mixed Fours 2017

Skibbereen’s Rhona O’Donoghue and John McNamara receiving the Munster Mixed Foursomes Cup from Jim Hornibrook, Captain Muskerry Golf Club.

Skibbeen’s John McNamara and Rhona O’Donoghue won the Munster Mixed Foursomes at Muskerry recently.  The pair carded a winning score of 71 on the testing course to win by a shot.  This was the 80th staging of the event and there was a large entry from clubs all over Munster.  Michael and Brid Halloran took second place on 72.5 and East Cork took third place one shot further back.  As well as the cup, the winners were also presented with commemorative prizes.  The cup was first presented in in 1937 and counts Jimmy Bruen as one of the many well know winners through the years.  Claire Coughlan Ryan and Oonagh Barry win the Australian Spoons at Co. Longford Golf Club last week.  Despite wet and heavy conditions the Cork pairing of Claire Coughlan Ryan and Oonagh Barry were a model of consistency with 19 points on both the front and extremely tricky back nine at Co. Longford Golf Club in a round that had birdies at the par 3 8th and par 4 15th.  Last years winners Helen Jones and Vivienne Houston (Royal Portrush) won the best gross.  Presented to the ILGU in 1967 by the Australian Ladies Golf Union to support players representing Ireland at International Competitions, the Australian Spoons is contended for by clubs across Ireland.  Clubs hold an 18 hole stableford greensomes qualifier, in which their nett and gross winners progress to the District Finals.

Masterful Muskerry win Fred Daly Trophy

Fred Daly WinnersMuskerry were crowned the new Fred Daly Trophy Munster Champions after a great display of golf in Fermoy today.  It was the second day of Munster finals in North Cork, there was no joy for Fota Island in the Junior Foursomes yesterday, and Cork hopes were high with a large contingent of Muskerry supporters present in Fermoy.  And those hopes were justified, led from the front by recent Munster Under 15 winner Fionn Hickey, Muskerry overcame stiff challenges from Waterford Castle and holders Limerick to claim their first Fred Day Pennant.  They overturned an early deficit in this morning’s semi-final against Waterford Castle to win 3.5-1.5.  Wins from Fionn Hickey, Sean Geary and Eoghan O’Shaughnessy on the 19th put them into a tough final against Limerick.  Playing off scratch on the day, Muskerry were giving away more than a few shots to the holders.  But that didn’t matter as the Muskerry Boys dug in for a historic win.  Fionn Hickey led from Continue reading

Muskerry through in thrilling Fred Daly area final

Muskerry Fred Daly Area Final 2017Muskerry had a great win in the Fred Daly Trophy area final last night, beating Mallow in a very close match.  Blarney was the venue for the match and Mallow would have been favourites to advance.  They had a big handicap advantage on paper and most of the players would have much more experience at this level of inter-club competition.

Jack Egan was first out for Muskerry and he beat Ed Walsh on the 18th to set a strong positive tone for the winners.  As it happened the first point was already in the bag for Muskerry, Jack Taylor was giving up five shots in his match but still recorded a 4&3 win to claim a point for Muskerry.  Taylor’s match was the only one not to go the full distance.  When Egan closed out his mast on the 18th shortly after the advantage was clearly with the underdogs.  The winning point came from  Sean Geary who holed out from the fairway on the last hole, Geary birdied from 70 yards to win one up and secure the win for his club.  At the same time Fionn Hickey was headed up the 19th after finishing level after 18 holes.  He was called in, as was Eoghan O’Shaughnessy who was one up in his match on the 18th.  It was a hugely impressive win considering that Muskerry were giving up an aggregate of 21 shots in five matches.  The subs were Stephen Riordan and Peter O’Mahony, and the squad was under the watchful eye of Dave Taylor and Peter Fenlon.

Hickey Regains Muskerry Scratch Cup Title

Muskerry Senior Scratch Cup 2017

Jason O’Callaghan (Ryans SuperValu) presenting the Muskerry Senior Scratch Cup to Cork’s John Hickey, also included is Jim Hornibrook, Captain.

John Hickey won the Muskerry Senior Scratch Cup in Muskerry on Saturday.  The Cork member won in dramatic circumstances after a sudden death play-off which lasted for four holes.  Hickey finished the 36 holes on a score of level par after shooting rounds of 72 and 70.  He tied for the lead with Castletroy’s Andrew McCormack.  The Limerick man won in Douglas last year and rarely leaves Cork empty handed after a number of good finishes.  The play-off was an exciting affair and lasted for four holes before Hickey won with a birdie on the par three 6th.  The first hole was halved in pars, and both golfers birdied the short par four which came next.  McCormack chipped in for birdie, while Hickey two putted from just off the green.  The pair skipped the 3rd and 4th and went to half the fifth holes which was the third play-off holes.  Hickey had a chance on the fifth, he missed a six footer for birdie which McCormack got up and down from a greenside bunker.  The 6th is probably the most Continue reading
