Sean Desmond had home win in Monkstown at the second event and Peter O’Keeffe was the winner Cork Continue reading

O’Keeffe wins Senior Cup Alliance at Cork

Peter O’Keeffe was the latest winner in the Cork Senior Cup Alliance.  The Douglas golfer shot a winning three under par score in Cork Golf Club on Saturday to win the third event of the series.  Starting on the 15th hole, O’Keeffe got off to a fast start with a birdie on the par four.  He added another on the 2nd but gave that back on the short third hole.  He picked up another two birdies including one on the 12th hole on the way back to finishing the 15 hole competition.

Jack Murphy and Paddy Quill were just one shot off the lead, with Karl Bornemann and James Walsh also finishing in the red on one under.  Eoghan Ling, Morgan Cain and Tom Tupper signed for level par.  In total 26 golfers played which is a great result considering the recent weather.  It’s hoped to schedule the last of the four events in Douglas before the end of December.

Peter O’Keeffe came agonisingly close to capturing the South of Ireland Championship last week.  O’Keeffe is a major fan of Lahinch and went to the Pierse Motors sponsored South after finding some form at the British Amateur a few weeks ago.  The Douglas golfer opened the Strokeplay qualifier with a two under par 70 to sit just inside the top ten.  A second round 72 ensured that he finished in the top 25, comfortably qualifying for the matchplay stage.  On Friday he had a tough assignment but dispatched two Irish Internationals.  In the first round he beat Marc Boucher by two holes and on Friday afternoon he wrapped up his match against Alex Maguire with a 3 & 2 win on the 16th green.  Saturday’s matches would Continue reading

Cork’s Top Amateurs (Men)

So how do you start to build a ranking of Cork’s top men’s golfers over the past 100 years?

Rankings and lists are always subjective, and I’m sure many people will have their own opinions on the list as they work their way through it.  Rankings always come down to points, and allocating points for Continue reading

Top Class week for Douglas

Sean Reddy pictured after winning the Connacht Buys U14 Championship.

As weeks go, last week was pretty impressive for Douglas Golf Club.  A national title, a provincial title and a few key wins in inter-club matches meant that Douglas had an exceptional week.  Karl Bornemann and Sean Reddy brought back some silverware from their events in Waterford and Mayo.  Peter O’Keeffe reached the final four in the North of Ireland at Royal Portrush and there were inter-club wins in the Womens Senior Cup, Mens Senior Cup and the Barton Shield.

As well as their members performances around the country, they also hosted the Munster Under 16 Boys Open.  This was the first open event to be held over the newly rated black course.  The par 70 layout see’s the 3rd and 18th reduced to par fours, and new tees in place on Continue reading

Winners from 2020 can Smile

There weren’t too many winners in Cork golf in 2020, but those few that did manage to claim success will look back on the year with a smile.  After losing eight weeks in the spring, and with graduated protocols for a return to competitive golf, the national and regional schedules changed dramatically with far fewer individual and inter-club events taking place.  Berehaven made history in October when the West Cork club won their first Munster title.  They won the Munster final of the AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield in Killarney   Wins over Tramore and Shannon saw them emerge from Killarney with the pennant as Munster champions, their first time the club had achieved success at this level.  Unfortunately for Berehaven, the plans for the all-Ireland finals in Donegal in late October were postponed.  The 2020 finals are now scheduled to take place in Donegal in 2021.
