Paul McCarthy from Mallow shot a one under par 71 to complete the 36 hole qualifier in 7th place at the South of Ireland in Lahinch. The Munster Youths champion opened with a bogey but closed with the last of his three birdies to sign for a 71. He added that to yesterday’s 74 to finish in the top 10 from the field of 150 golfers.
Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty shot a level par 74 to finish the qualifier inside the top 20 and Muskerry’s Niall Gorey finished in 31st. Gorey needed a good second round after shooting an 80 yesterday. Today he added an impressive 70 to ensure he got through to the matchplay stages.
It was a lot closer for Conor Coyne and Shane Whooley. Both finished on +9, and it looked like the projected cut mark. A countback was needed to separate the six golfers on +9 (with only 5 spots available). In the end Coyne qualified as the 63rd player and Whooley took the 64th & final place.
