Castlemartyr was a hive of activity over the weekend as the annual scratch cup competitions took place. The McCarthy Insurance Group Scratch Cups started on Friday and through until Sunday with the timesheet for each of the days all but full. The weather played its part with the CSS at 74 for Saturday and 73 for Friday and Sunday. Cork’s Kevin Dorgan and Cobh’s Alan Cuthbert battled it out for honours in the Junior Scratch cup, with Dorgan taking it on a count back with an excellent score of level par 72. Lee Valley’s Alan Cashman was third with a 74 and the net prize was won by Shane Dempsey from Fernhill. There was again another count back to separate the top two contenders for the Intermediate Cup, Conor Hayes (Slievenamon) and Kieran McCarthy (Fermoy). Both shot a solid 8 over par 80, with Hayes taking first place on the back nine. John Ring from Mahon was third and Castlemartyr’s Jonathan Lee won best nett. In the Minor Scratch cup, another count back was used to decide the winner between Bernard Wallace from Kinsale and John Noone from Cahir Park. Both players shot 92, with Wallace winning it in the end. Cobh’s Sean Murphy was third and the net prize was won by Castlemartyr’s Eugene O’Connor.
Next up for Castlemartyr is their Senior Scratch Cup which takes place on 20th September. The 36 hole competition is sure to be a sell-out and Castlemartyr’s Mark Shanahan will be aiming to win his fourth title. A very attractive prize fund is in place for the Amarence sponsored competition and anyone interested in playing should contact Brady Sherwood in Castlemartyr.
