Three Cork clubs will be chasing glory this weekend in Tramore as the last of the AIG Cups and Shields finals are down for decision. Barton Shield holders Kinsale put on a strong performance at home in the qualifiers to come through the tough South Munster section. Although they’re without John Murphy this weekend, Kinsale have a strong panel and with the experience of last year and the guidance of Ger Cullinane, they’ll be ready to take on Limerick. Cathal Butler and Gary Ward have been playing well recently, both golfers were central to the win in Thurles last year and they will certainly be hoping a repeat of that performance.

Davey Barry continued his solid run of form with a top ten finish at the Irish PGA Championship in Bunclody. After a very impressive 68 yesterday, the Douglas Pro finished with a one over par 73, which saw him claim 7th place. It’s his fourth top ten of the season after positive results in Dromoland, Malahide and of course his win in the Conor O’Dwyer Pro-Am in Kilkea Castle. There were two birdies on Davey’s card today, bringing his total for the week to 10. At the start of the season he committed to give €10 to charity for every birdie he had in competition. He already has close to 40 birdies in the bag for the season and with a few more events left on the calendar. He’s headed for Derry this evening for the City of Derry Pro Am which 
Fitness experts Mike Carroll and Liam Hennessy are bringing a golf fitness masterclass to Cork in a few weeks, and the exciting event promises to be a sell-out as the two specialists will share information on what they call the 5 Pillars of Golf Strength & Conditioning. The evening seminar aims to give golfers a better understanding of the links between golf specific physical training and performance on the course. Cork native Mike Carroll has been based in the US for the past three years, while Liam Hennessy is the founder of Setanta College and has almost 30 years experience working with elite teams and athletes across many sports. He’s more commonly seen on the first tee, or possibly on hand when a ruling is needed. Most weekends he’s watching golf rather than playing it, but last weekend Dave Prendergast swapped his Munster colours for club colours and won the Cork Golf Club Intermediate Scratch Cup. Prendergast, who is the Honorary Match & Handicapping Secretary for Munster Golf, shot an impressive 67 to win the competition. His gross nine over (81) included a birdie on the third and a great run of six pars on the back nine. It was the back nine that won it for Dave, Cork’s Donal Mulvihill also finished on 67 while Mahon’s Eoghan O’Mahony took third place. Aidan Carroll won the best gross prize with 83.
