Reddan wins Mallow Scratch Cup

Mallow held another very successful senior scratch cup over the weekend with an impressive field taking part.  The Dan Butler Cup was on offer for the winner, with three rounds of golf taking place over two days.  After the opening two rounds, Nenagh’s Dave Reddan led by two strokes, ahead of Ben Murray and Jimmy Walsh.  But after the final 18 was played there was a tie on top of the leaderboard as Fermoy’s Dean O’Riordan joining Reddan in first place.  O’Riordan shot a two under par 68 while Reddan shot a 73.  When the first play-off hole was tied, it was onto the second where Reddan too the honours.

The Tipperary native was runner-up in Mallow for the past two years so it was fitting that he claim the title after supporting the event for several years.  The event, which was run by Conor Dowling and a number of members was sponsored by PJ Hegarty and was another great success.

Karl Bornemann continued his great season with a win in the Bandon Senior Scratch Cup over the weekend.  The Douglas member shot a 67 to win by four shots.  Muskerry’s Ronan Twomey was second with a 71, beating David Howard on the countback.

There’s another scratch cup to be won this weekend, the Kinsale Senior Scratch Cup takes place on Saturday over 18 holes and is again sponsored by Tim Smyth from O’Doherty Advisory.

Blarney Golf Club are holding the inaugural Christy Horgan Memorial Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday 21st.  The event is a 36 hole competition with the first round getting underway at 8am.  The event has a generous prize fund and is sponsored by Day Night Security Systems.  Entries can be made by contacting Darren Kelleher on 085 210 9199.

The East Cork Senior Scratch Cup takes place on Sunday 28th September with details available from the Pro Shop.

Kinsale’s Shane Kenneally was representing Ireland last week at the European Seniors in Bulgaria.  Kenneally finished in the top 30 in  the Strokeplay qualifier, and won his quarter final match.  Although Ireland lost their semi-final, he won his match on Saturday as Ireland secured the bronze medal.

A number of Cork clubs were in action in Athlone for the AIG inter-club finals, including Fota Island who were in action in the Women’s Junior Cup.  In the quarter final  Castletroy, Julia Falvey Ryan put the first point on the board for Fota with an impressive 7&6 win.  Rose Nagle added a second point when she won on the 16th and the win was confirmed when Aileen Sweeney O’Sullivan won her match.  That meant that Wendy Keenan and Deirdre Ryan were called in, and Fota now looked forward to an afternoon semi-final against Powerscourt.

Julia Falvey Ryan was again the star for Fota, winning on the 13th this time to secure the first point for the Cork side.  Aileen Sweeney O’Sullivan followed her team mate on the 13th to add a second point but the tide turned for Powerscourt and they won the remaining three matches to advance to the final.  It was another impressive campaign for Fota who have tasted provincial success in several grades of the AIG Inter-Club events over the past five years.

Monkstown reached the All-Ireland final stage for the second year in a row in the AIG Irish Junior Cup.  The faced Castletroy in their quarter final and they came out on top with a 3-2 scoreline.  Wins for Austin Hynes and Jake Morrison levelled the match after the Cork side lost the first two matches.  Kevin Power was the hero for Monkstown on Friday afternoon when he won on the 18th green to send his side through to the semi-final.

Ed Farr got Monkstown off to the perfect start against Abbeyleix when he wrapped up his match on the 12th.  Abbeyleix levelled it in match two but Monkstown went ahead again when Austin Hynes won on the 18th.  The back two matches went against the Cork side though, putting Abbeyleix into the final.

In the Munster Country Clubs Clubs finals in Glengarriff, Raffeen Creek overcame Spanish Point in the semi final, but lost out to Lismore in the final. The final of the Michael Cashman Trophy took place in East Cork on Sunday.  Muskerry qualified from Munster East but unfortunately lost out to Limerick in the final.

Fermoy are in action next Saturday in the Flogas Irish Mixed Foursomes, they will face Castletroy in the All-Ireland quarter final.  Muskerry are also in action, they take on Woodstock in the quarter final of the Irish Mixed Fourball.
