Night Golf is coming to Cork for the very first time and later this month Cork golfers will have the opportunity to experience the unique format in Lee Valley Golf Club. Thanks to Mardyke Arena UCC and sponsors Cogan’s Toyota, Lee Valley will be lit up like an airport runway for the event which is being held over three nights. The ten-hole event will take place in darkness, with coloured lights marking the fairways, greens and hazards, and with a luminous golf ball in play, golfers will have no excuse for not keeping it in play. The team of four event takes place from Wednesday 29th to Friday 31st March, the shotgun format will see the 20 teams start at 8pm with prizes and refreshments included on each night. Already over a third of the places have been reserved so anyone interested in playing should book their place now. All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting Marymount University Hospital and Hospice. Teams for the Wednesday and Thursday nights are €300 and teams on the Friday night are €400. Full details and booking details are available from Wayne Falvey in Mardyke Arena UCC. This is first time that Night Golf will be held in Munster and the idea came from Patsy Ryan. Local knowledge seemed to give two local golfers the edge in Cork today as Padraig Dooley (Drive Golf Performance) and David Ryan (Cahir Park) won the Munster PGA event. Over 20 golfers started out this morning and while there was a cold wind blowing through Little Island, the course was in great condition and surprisingly dry given the heavy rainfall over the weekend. Both golfers trained under Peter Hickey and they returned today to triumph over a field of talented professionals. Both golfers played very steady golf, Ryan was an early starter and had birdies on the 6th, 11th & 12th. The only blemish came on the 17th, but the two under par 70 was enough to get into the winners circle. It was a similar story for Dooley, he also birdied the 6th and the 12th. A bogey on the 14th brought him back to -1 but a birdie on the 17th saw him sign for a 70 and take a share of Continue reading

Peter O’Keeffe opened his season on a high last Sunday when he finished joint top at the opening round of the Mid West Golf Alliance at Dromoland. He shot 37 points to tie for the lead alongside Andrew McCormack and David Reddan Jnr.
O’Keeffe has been working hard on his own strength & conditioning programme and while that’s yielding results in the studio, and his on course programme seems to be going to plan too. Despite losing a ball on the 5th hole, he held his composure to plot his way around the parkland course in 37 gross points. The gross stableford scoring system in use allowed O’Keeffe to recover quickly after the 5th, he hit a 320 yard bomb on the next hole and he went on to beat par by one shot. Gross stableford gives one point for a bogey, two for a par, three for a birdie and so on.
This year the format for the Alliance has changed, there are four qualifying rounds in Dromoland and the top two scores will count. The top eight qualifiers will go forward to a matchplay shootout. The second round takes place on Sunday next and any interested in playing should contact 061 368444.

Lisselan Golf Club are set for a bumper 2017 as the club embarks on a new era, operating as a members club. With the Lisselan Estate up for sale on the open market for over a year, there were doubts if the course and club would survive beyond 2016 when the licence agreement expired. The short and medium term future is assured as the members have taken over the management of the club. Captain Mark Naughton, Lady Captain Helen Hughes and President Tony Calnan will lead the 300 strong membership into another exciting chapter for the West Cork club. Since it was founded just over 12 years ago, the small club has gone from strength to strength and has an impressive list of achievements. Lisselan were All-Ireland Mixed Foursomes runners up 2010 & South Munster Area winners 2012, Jimmy Bruen National semi- finalists 2015, South Munster Pierce Purcell winners 2016, South Munster Michael Cashman Fourball runners-up 2016, Michael Minihan Shield winners 2016, McEvoy Shield winners 2014/2015/2016 as well as two West Cork Junior Shields and four Continue reading
