Douglas Golf Club bridged an 18 year gap on Friday when they won the Munster Fred Daly Trophy at East Cork Golf Club.  It was in interesting journey for the Douglas boys as three times over the past few weeks it looked like they were heading out of the competition.  Their perseverance however saw them come back from the brink against Cork in the area final last week, Kanturk in the semi-final and Limerick in the final.  Continue reading

Hickey Helps in Munster Win

Golf_John Hickey_Cork GC_Munster_july 2014Munster won the senior inter-provincial title last week and two debutants were key to Munster’s success.  Robin Dawson from Waterford made the successful transition from the boys team to the senior team, while Cork’s John Hickey came in with three wins and a half in his five matches.

East Cork beak Cobh hearts

East Cork broke Cobh hearts again last weekend as they progressed from the Pierce Purcell qualifiers at Mahon.  On Saturday they accounted for hosts Mahon and on Sunday morning they beat Monkstown.  On the other side of the draw Cobh beat Castlemartyr, Fermoy and Mallow to advance to the venue final.  It was the same match up as the Bruen qualifier two weeks ago but Cobh started brightly and held the advantage through most of the afternoon. Mardyke Arena to Host Golf Seminars

As the build up to the Irish Open continues, Cork’s Mardyke Arena have announced two golf seminars that will take place in June.  On Tuesday 17th June the Arena will host a conference focused on fitness in golf, and a large number of amateurs, professionals and coaches are expected to attend.  The seminar is being run by the newly formed Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI), the European Tour Performance Institute and the Mardyke Arena UCC.  The CGI is a new body made up from the GUI, ILGU and the PGA.  Junior Golf Ireland has been subsumed into the new umbrella body and their key objectives include increasing participation and driving elite performance in both amateur and professional codes. Gorey wins in Castletroy, Updated GUI Order of Merit

Niall Gorey went one better this week and took the winners spot in Castletroy.  After a mixed start to the season the Kildare native took second place in Ballybunion last week and signalled a return to form.  He posted two 71’s to finish two under par and five shots clear of the field.  Muskerry’s Sean Barry took third spot and Cork’s John Hickey took the gross prize for the 2nd round.
