Mardyke Arena to Host Golf Seminars

As the build up to the Irish Open continues, Cork’s Mardyke Arena have announced two golf seminars that will take place in June.  On Tuesday 17th June the Arena will host a conference focused on fitness in golf, and a large number of amateurs, professionals and coaches are expected to attend.  The seminar is being run by the newly formed Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI), the European Tour Performance Institute and the Mardyke Arena UCC.  The CGI is a new body made up from the GUI, ILGU and the PGA.  Junior Golf Ireland has been subsumed into the new umbrella body and their key objectives include increasing participation and driving elite performance in both amateur and professional codes.

The conference is titled ‘The pathway to excellence, conditioning, fitness and screening for golf’ and a number of high profile speakers have been confirmed.  With interest building from both the amateur and professional game, Mardyke Arena’s Wayne Falvey is looking forward to the event; “We’re delighted to announce the seminar on the 17th June in association with the CGI and EPTI.  The seminar is targeted at both professional and amateur golfers looking to improve their game, golf coaches, golf teachers, fitness professionals, physiotherapists & physical therapists.  Speakers on the day include Neil Manchip, National Head Coach of the GUI; David Kearney, High Performance Director of the ILGU; Orlaith Buckley, Physiotherapist with the European Seniors Tour and many more.”

PGA Ireland Coach Education Manager Jussi Pitkanen will also be speaking at the event has helped compile the itinerary with a holistic approach; “The aim of the conference on June 17th is to highlight the importance of physical conditioning on the development of elite golfers, while considering the issues faced by amateur players.  We also wanted to create a link to the coaching context in order to get a complete look at player development.”

The other event focuses on the business of golf and takes place on Monday 16th June.  Lee Valley Golf Club plays host to a seminar entitled ‘Business Planning and Marketing for your Golf Club’. The purpose of the event is to stimulate thinking on the challenges facing golf clubs in Ireland and to provide ideas on actions club may take to positively address these issues. A recent report from the CGI has highlighted that over 80,000 golfers dropped their club membership over the past decade.  Developing overall membership levels, especially the numbers of juniors and ladies, is one of the stated objectives in the recently published CGO Development Plan.  The day is sure to be interesting, informative and of great benefit to course owners, Club Managers and members of the Management Committee.  Both seminars are full day events and places are already being taken.  Full details are available from Mardyke Arena.
