Top qualifier Mairead Martin won her first round match at the Irish Womens Close in Mullingar today.  It was a north Cork battle as Karturk’s Martin took on Doneraile’s Walsh.

Martin faced 2017 Munster Women’s Champion Walsh in today’s first matchplay round and got off to a good start, winning 3 of the first 6 holes.  Walsh steadied the match but the deficit was too much for her to fight back and the game finished on the 16th green, 3&2 to Martin.  Martin now faces Irish Womens Strokeplay Champion Maria Dunne who’ll be looking to complete a rare double.  Walsh goes on the the plate matchplay where she faces Shannon Burke tomorrow.

It was a good day for Cork golfers, and the 17th was the hole where the other four Cork matches finished.  Sara Byrne had a 2&1 over Alice Hutchinson and Rachel Continue reading

Girls International call-ups for Byrne, Clancy, Martin & Thompson.

Sara Byrne Fairhaven 2017

Sara Byrne

Four Cork golfers were selected on the Irish Girls team today, they’ll be heading off to Finland next month to take place in the European Team Championships.  Sara Byrne (Douglas) will be making her debut at this level while Valerie Clancy (Killarney/Mitchelstown), Mairead Martin (Kanturk) and Rachel Thompson (Cork) were all selected on the team for the second time.

It’s a great achievement and a rare case where four of the six team members are from one county.  They will be joined by French U18 Champion Annabel Wilson (Lurgan) and Lauren Walsh (Castlewarden), who holed the winning putt at the Girls’ Home International matches on her Irish debut in last year.  Byrne was also selected for an Under 16 girls team and has posted some very positive results thus far in 2017, most impressively a 3rd place finish at the prestigious Fairhaven Trophy earlier this month.  The Team Captain Gemma Butler said  “the girls have had some fantastic results so far this year and having won the second flight at the 2016 European Championships, we are excited to build on that result this time around.”

Thompson wins Cathy Smith Trophy in Baltray

Rachel Thompson Baltray May 2017Cork’s Rachel Thompson finished strongly  at the Irish Womens Open Strokeplay in Baltray over the weekend.  She captured the Cathy Smith Trophy as the best under 18 and she also finished with the best nett score.  Rachel won the U18 prize with a one stroke lead over Germany’s Sarina Schmidt, but when it came to the gross prize she had a five shot lead over the field.  The competition was won by Mari Dunne who lead form the first round and closed on -9 for the tournament.

Thompson finished in second place in the Lahinch Scratch Cup recently and since then her golf has moved up a gear.  He performances over the weekend has seen her handicap drop from 2 to scratch.  Despite not playing in the Portuguese or Spanish Opens, Thompson is currently 9th in the ILGU Senior Order of Merit.  Valerie Clancy, Sara Byrne, Mairead Martin, Paula Walsh and Karen O’Neill all feature in the top twenty so there should be plenty of Cork golfers in contention for the Ladies and Girls interprovincials.

Castlemartyr Drives Ahead with Ladies Offer

castlemartyr-lady-captains-day_2After the official launch of the ladies club in Castlemartyr earlier this year, the five star resort has launched a very attractive membership offer for the year ahead.  The normal membership fee has been slashed to just €599 as the new club makes a play to attract ladies to the club.  Castlemartyrs’ PGA Professional Brady Sherwood has worked hard for the past two years to build and develop the ladies side of their membership packages.  “There has always been a demand for a ladies club in Castlemartyr Golf Club.” Said Sherwood.  “Due to our golf course originally being so busy with green fee players in the opening years, there was never really a clear focus on the ladies membership until now.   This inland Links style golf course is easy to walk and not too long or over challenging.  It’s also a resort style set up, so it’s always prepared and set up beautifully for enjoyable golf.  The feedback we get from lady golfers is extremely positive and they love the fact being sand based you can twelve months of the year in great condition, the majority of the new lady members that have joined Castlemartyr for the simple fact of accessing the seven-day full membership Continue reading

Martin, Clancy, Thompson & Byrne named on ILGU Panels

Valerie Clancy

Valerie Clancy

The ILGU announced their coaching panels for 2016/2017 and there was good news for several Cork golfers.  Valerie Clancy and Mairead Martin were both named on the ILGU High Performance panel for 2017.  It’s a great achievement for both girls as they have continued to improve through the 2016 season.

2016 was also a breakthrough for Cork’s Rachel Thompson who was added to the funded performance panel for the year ahead.  The high performance panel has the stated objective of developing world class players while the funded performance panel is aimed at encouraging golfers to compete at international level, at individual and team events.  Thompson, Martin and Clancy all featured on the Irish Girls team that won  the home internationals in Wales earlier this year.

Sara Byrne (Douglas) was named on the Horizon coaching panel which is aimed at supporting and developing younger players, and preparing them for the transition to the high performance panel in years to come.  The ILGU are currently in the process of developing the new structure with the regional professionals with a view to rolling out the revised plans early in the new year.

McNamara top 10 at Irish PGA, No joy for East Cork at Ladies Senior Foursomes

Golf_Cian McNamara_Monkstown GC_June2014Cian McNamara shot an impressive 73 today in very testing conditions to stay in contention at Moyvalley.  High winds hampered golfers all day with the later starters suffering the most.  McNamara’s solid round means that he’s in 7th place and just four shots off the lead.  David Higgins also carded a 73 and he’s in 12th place.  David Barry had one of the best rounds of the afternoon, his two over par 74 has him on +1 for the tournament and in a tie for 15th place.

Ciaran McKenna is tied for 36th place after a second round 78.  He’s on +8 for his first 36 holes.  David Ryan looked like missing the cut after a second round 78, but the afternoon scores saw him jump a few places and he made it through to the weekend right on the cut mark of +11.  Padraig Dooley, Stephen Hayes, Ronan Collins and Conor Coyne all had round in the 80’s and missed the cut which was limited to the top 50 plus ties.  Daniel Crowley and Peter Hickey also missed the cut after poor opening round yesterday.  The lead in the Continue reading

East Cork through to Senior Foursomes Final, AIG Ladies Cups and Shields

In the hotly contested Senior Foursomes semi-final yesterday, East Cork dominated Portumna from the start. All East Cork matches were up through the 6th and continued in this fashion.  Portumna player and Senior International Suzanne Corcoran and partner Madden Madden made a comeback on the final stretch but opponents Lillian Hartigan and Deirdre Ryan closed the match on the home green. The final result was 3-0 to the Cork side.

The second semi-final was contested between Kilkenny and Royal Portrush. Kilkenny were slight favourites after overcoming Milltown yesterday but Royal Portrush has the title in sight and it wasn’t to be for the All-Ireland Senior Cup Champions. The top match was all square through 12 and there was no difference between the teams but Helen Jones and Heidi Simpson (Royal Portrush) edged ahead and secured a 2&1 win. Kilkenny’s youthful middle pairing of Sarah Molloy and Jan Browne delivered once again and closed out the match on the 14th. The final match looked like it would be an early win for Royal Portrush as they were 6 up through 9 but Kilkenny’s Mary Leahy-Browne and partner Phyl Doyle fought back before missing a putt on the 18th to lose 1 down. Royal Portrush will take on East Cork tomorrow.
