Murphy’s dramatic finish to win Munster Boys

Kinsale’s John Murphy won the Munster Boy’s title in dramatic fashion with two birdies on the final holes to win by one shot.  Murphy had a three shot lead going into the final round but a triple bogey on the 8th cut his lead.  Fortwilliam’s Hugh O’Hare jumped into the lead after Murphy bogeyed the 15th and 16th.  Murphy produced a strong finish however, birdieing the 17th and 18th at Dromoland Castle to capture the title.  Murphy finished the championship on -5 after signing for a final round 74.  Hugh O’Hare was a shot behind on -4 and Andrew Mulhall (Waterford Castle) was third on -3.  Ross Kelly from Tuam Golf Club shot the low round of the day, his 70 saw him finish in the top ten.

Monkstown’s Sean Desmond finished in 8th place, a final round 78 saw him finish on +6.  Mark Healy was 24th and Adam Boland had a disappointing final round to finish in 33rd spot.  Jack Egan had a final round 78, this will have been agreat learning experience for the young Muskerry player

Murphy opens with impressive 67, Munster Boys Round 1 Report

Final Round, EMC Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup 2016Kinsale’s John Murphy opened with an impressive five under par 67 at the Munster Boys in Dromoland Castle.  Murphy was one of two golfers to break 70, Hugh O’Hare from Fortwilliam has a to shot lead after carding a seven under par 65.

Mark Healy is just outside the top ten after he signed for a one over par 73, and he’s one shot ahead of Mallow duo Greg Barrett and Adam Boland.

Daniel O’Sullivan (Mallow), Eric Rumley (Kinsale) and Sean Desmond (Monkstown) and Cillian Moloney are all just inside the cut mark and will need to manage their way around Dromoland Castle tomorrow to ensure they stay in the top 50 and make the cut for the final 18 holes on Friday.  Darren Hourihan and Continue reading

Ronan Feerick (Mallow), Zak Collins (Douglas) and Mel Deasy (Bantry Bay) were all named on the Munster Under 14 interprovincial team today, in advance of the interpro’s which take place on Tullamore in two weeks time.

In Tralee today Cork’s Pat Lyons missed out on a win at the Irish Seniors Close.  Lyons signed for a 77 in the final round and finished in third place behind Castletroy’s Eamonn Haugh.  Lyons had led the competition after 18 holes and after 36 holes.  Castlemartyr’s John O’Brien secured his top ten position with a 76 to finish in 6th place, and Bandon’s Donal O’Donovan was also in the top ten.  Tom Cleary finished in 17th place and also finished in second place in the over 60 category, while Muskerry’s Hugh O’Leary and Douglas’ Karl Bornemann were in the top 20.  Cork’s Peter Cowley won the over 70 category.

Kinsale’s Mark Healy is tied for seventh place heading into the final round at the Connacht Boys at Glaway Golf Club.  Healy is six strokes off the lead after shooting rounds of 73 & 74.  John Murphy was the only other Cork golfer to make the cut for the final round, John had round of 78 and 73 to lie just outside the top 20.

Darren Hourihan (Douglas) had a second round 79 to miss the final round cut by two shots and Brian O’Connell, Eamonn O’Driscoll and Cillian Moloney also missed the cut.

In Tralee, Pat Lyons (Cork) leads the field in the Irish Seniors Close.  Lyone had two birdies on the front nine and turned on one under, but three bogies on the back nine saw him sign for a two over par 73, and finish day one two shots clear of the field.  There’s a strong Cork challenge after the first round, Castlemartyr’s John O’Brien is in a tie for 4th along with Donal O’Donovan (Bandon) and Leinster Seniors winner Michael Quirke (Doneraile) is a shot behind.  Karl Bornemann (Douglas), Tom Cleary (Cork ) and Jerry Crean (Kinsale) are all in the top 30.

The third round of the Irish Boys took place today at Castle Golf Club and four Cork golfers are through to the final round.  John Murphy (Kinsale) and Eamonn O’Driscoll (Clement Ader) were both safely through to the final round but there was an anxious wait for Sean Desmond and Eric Rumley.  Desmond, fresh from Monkstown’s Senior Cup wins last weekend, had a birdie on the 18th to sign for a 73.  He was pretty confident of making it into the final round but it looked like Eric would miss out by one.  Dropped shots in the closing holes Jack Hearn and Brian O’Connell brought all of the +14’s inside the cut.  Eamonn O’Driscoll is just outside the top 20 on +9 and John Murphy is also on +9.  Both however are well off the joint leaders on -6.  Mark Power and Thomas Mulligan are both six Continue reading

Butler best of Cork golfers at Leinster Youths (R1)

Cathal Butler leads the Cork challenge in Esker Hills at the Leinster Youths.  Butler shot a 74 but he’s currently six shots off the lead set by Adam Mulhall from Ardglass.  Mark Healy and Cillian Moloney both shot 78 and Adam McSweeney is a shot behind.

Sean’s letter wins Tour Experience for Gaelscoil Ui Drisceoil

Nine year old Sean Reddy had the experience of a lifetime during Irish Open week when he got a behind the scenes VIP tour.  Sean was a guest of the European Tour on the Wednesday after his letter was selected as one of four winning entries from hundreds of letters sent in from pupils and schools all over Ireland.  In addition to his VIP tour, Sean also won a prize for his school, and several of his friends from Gaelscoil Ui Drisceoil in Glanmire were also in the K Club for a special golf clinic courtesy of the Confederation of Golf in Ireland.

Sean’s VIP tour started in the media centre where 2015 winner Soren Kjeldsen was holding his press conference, and young golfer from Ballyvolane was invited to ask Kjeldsen a Continue reading
