Howard wins in Thurles, Munster PGA

Jack Howard chalked up another PGA win on Monday, finishing joint first at the Munster PGA Winter Series event in Thurles.  It was a first trip to the mid Tipperary course with host Raymond Ryan ensuring there was a warm reception for all the players.  Howard led the way in the 14 hole competition, the Fota Island assistant had birdies on the 2nd and 3rd but dropped a shot on the 11th.  He recovered with birdies on the 15th and the 18th to claim a share of the lead.  Paul O’Neill from Shannon also had four birdies and a bogey to tie the lead while Limerick’s Tim Rice birdied the final four holes to recover from being one over with four to play.  Jack Ryan, the new assistant in Castletroy was fourth with a two under return whole Ronan Collins, Raymond Ryan and Mark Collins all finished on one under.  It was a double success for Jack Howard and Paul O’Neill, they partnered with Ronan Collins for a winning 54 points in the team event.  Second place went to Mark Collins, Jack Ryan and Shane Irwin.

JP McManus Pro-Am Announces Details of Ticket Tender, final 100 tickets available

An additional 100 tickets will be tendered this month for the sold-out JP McManus Pro-Am, taking place at Adare Manor on the 6th & 7th July 2020. The tournament reached capacity on August 1st this year; however, due to unprecedented demand, The European Tour have released some additional tickets for public tender ahead of the sixth staging of the charity event.

Anybody wishing to submit a bid for a ticket cap, or number of ticket caps, is asked to now email tickets@jpmcmanusproam.com with their offer, full name and phone number. Top Ten finish for Davey Barry at Irish PGA Championship

Davey BarryDavey Barry continued his solid run of form with a top ten finish at the Irish PGA Championship in Bunclody.  After a very impressive 68 yesterday, the Douglas Pro finished with a one over par 73, which saw him claim 7th place.  It’s his fourth top ten of the season after positive results in Dromoland, Malahide and of course his win in the Conor O’Dwyer Pro-Am in Kilkea Castle.  There were two birdies on Davey’s card today, bringing his total for the week to 10.  At the start of the season he committed to give €10 to charity for every birdie he had in competition.  He already has close to 40 birdies in the bag for the season and with a few more events left on the calendar.  He’s headed for Derry this evening for the City of Derry Pro Am which Continue reading →

Davey Barry jumped into contention at the Irish PGA Championship in Bunclody, a second round 68 saw him move 15 places on the leaderboard into a tie for third place.  Barry went out in a level par 37 after two birdies and two bogies.  A birdie on the 10th started his back nine nicely, and he went on the have three more to sign for a four under par 68.  Added to his opening 74, he’s now on two under, five shots off the lead.  And the change in form had a lot to do with a new putter according to the Douglas GC Professional.  “I spent an hour on the putting green last night with a new putter, and it worked pretty well.  I also hit 16 greens so that also helped” said a delighted Davey.  “I played well yesterday but the putting was off.  Today was much better though.”  Barry’s 68 was one of only three scores in the 60’s.

Internationals win Pro Shop Challenge IV

Kinsale Pro Shop Challenge 2019There was great excitement in Kinsale on Thursday for the fourth staging of the annual Pro Shop Challenge. This year’s charity match was titled the “Internationals v Professionals, as Kinsale’s two Irish Internationals John Murphy and Eoghan Cassidy took on Kinsale’s PGA Professionals Ger Broderick and Ian Stafford.  Murphy has been a senior international for two years while Cassidy picked up his first international cap at under 14 level this year.  There was a special guest there on the day, the Mullingar scratch cup was in the pro shop, that was thanks to John Murphy’s win a week before in the famous Leinster tournament.  As play got underway it was the Professionals who took the lead, thanks to a birdie from Stafford on the first.  Cassidy levelled the match on the 5th with a tap in birdie after a perfect approach shot.

John Murphy was impressed with his new partner, it was the first time they played together in a competition.  “Eoghan was so impressive, he drove the ball like a professional” said the college Senior.  “He’s a class act and has huge things in store for him.  I really enjoyed watching him learn and gain experience in front of a large crowd, it was an opportunity I could only have dreamed of when I was his age.”  There was a hint of green keepers revenge on the course for the event, tight fairways and lightning fast greens challenged all four golfers as they put on a show for the large gallery.  The course in Farrangalway was in excellent condition, the new changes to the 9th, 17th and 18th have bedded in and there was scarcely a blade of grass out of place on the championship course.  The birdies were a little bit scarcer than usual, but the banter between the players entertained everyone, with referee Gerry Waldron keeping Continue reading →

Kinsale Pro Shop Challenge 3_July 2018_2 (002)There’s less than a week to go to Kinsale’s Pro Shop Challenge is back, the fourth staging of the annual charity fundraiser.  And there’s a change this year with Kinsale’s two amateur internationals taking on the Pro’s.  The Kinsale Pro team remains the same, Ger Broderick and Ian Stafford are currently in training in the hope of winning back the title they lost last year.  The line up on the other side has changed though, the amateurs are now restyled as the “internationals” with 14 year old Eoghan Cassidy teaming up with senior Irish international John Murphy.  Murphy is currently on the senior Irish team while Cassidy is on both the Irish Under 14 and Under 16 squads.  The event takes place next Thursday, and there should be a great afternoon of golf and fun.  “The event itself is a fourball betterball match between Ger and myself and John Eoghan” explained Continue reading →

Irwin wins PGA Assistants Championship

Shane Irwin PGA AssistantsMonkstown’s Shane Irwin held his overnight lead to claim the PGA Assistants title in Nuremore yesterday, winning by a margin of five shots over the field.  Rounds of 76 and 72 yesterday were more than enough to keep a healthy distance between himself and the pack as the Limerick native went on to claim his biggest PGA win to date.  Irwin’s impressive 69 and 67 on day one gave him a great start, he had a six shot lead at the halfway stage.

“I didn’t expect to win but I expected to do well.  I went for a lesson with coach Eddie Doyle a couple of weeks ago and I did feel confident,” said the 24-year-old.  “The first day was very good. I played some solid golf in round one. The second round was very similar and I managed to pick up a few birdies.”  Holding the top spot was a new experience for Shane, but he retained a comfortable margin despite much tougher conditions on day two.  “It was tough over the final 36-holes. Irwin six ahead in PGA Assistants Championship

Monkstown’s Shane Irwin has an impressive six shot lead going into the second day of the PGA Assistants Championship at Nuremore in Co Monaghan.  The Limerick native had two impressive rounds yesterday, shooting 69 and 67 on the par 71 track.  Irwin had the hot hand with nine birdies in the 36 holes.  He opened his second round with a bogey but recovered quickly with two birdies to get into the red for his round.  One more bogey followed on the back nine but he also added four birdies to sign for a four under par 67.

That left him six ahead of the field, St Annes’ Gary McGrane on level par.  Fota Island’s Jack Howard is eight place, and will be hoping to catch up a few places, and Shane Livesey is just outside the top twenty.

The final 36 holes will be completed today.
