Sunday started with high hopes for plenty of golfers, O’Donovan, O’Brien and Gorey were all in contention at the Irish Mid-Am in New Forrest.  Cian McNamara and Wayne O’Callaghan were in the top 10 in the Shell Carne Pro-Am and Fernhill were due to take on Blarney in the first round of the Barton Shield at Muskerry. Muskerry win Barton Shield

 

Muskerry captured the Munster Barton Shield title on Saturday when they put together two great wins in Shannon Golf Club.  On Saturday morning they had a narrow one hole win over Ballybunion.  Dave O’Donovan and Niall Gorey won their match by one hole and Daniel Hallissey and John Waldron halved.  In the final they faced Dungarvan who had a big win over Limerick in their semi-final.  O’Donovan and Gorey came out on top again, winning by two holes.  Hallissey and Waldron kept pace with Dungarvan’s Peter Mullaney and Alan Thomas to seal the win for Muskerry. Castlemartyr announced themselves as contenders for the Barton Shield last weekend when they qualified for the area final on Sunday next.  Castlemartyr were the only team to play in all four rounds, and the beat Cobh in the preliminary round.  They beat hosts Douglas with a comprehensive nine hole winning margin on Saturday afternoon to set up a match with Kinsale on Sunday morning.  Continue reading

Fota beat Mahon in tight Fred Daly Match

The final second round match in the Fred Daly took place on Tuesday with Fota Island and Mahon playing in Cobh.  Fota were missing Jack Howard who was competing in the Irish Boys Open in Thurles, but other than that they fielded a strong side.  Fota had an advantage in terms of handicaps but Mahon put it up to Fota and every match went as far as the 16th at least.  Fota’s Paul Twohig and Ronan O’Connell Continue reading
