Cork GC to Host National Inter-Varsity Staff Event

The UCC Staff golf society will set about retaining their Inter-Varsity title next week, and they’ll have local knowledge on their side as the competition takes place in Cork Golf Club.  On Thursday next ten college staff teams will play for the prestigious national title in a competition that has been running for 35 years.  The UCC team won the event in 2015 when it was held in Ballykisteen.  Having last won in 2010, the UCC Staff GS would love to do the double and win in their home county.  It’s the first time in ten years that the event has been hosts by UCC as it rotates among the ten colleges who take part in the competition.  Continue reading

Entry to Munster events now open

Online entry for the Munster Strokeplay and the Munster Youths is now open on Golfnet.  The current weather might not be conducive to playing golf, but qualifying conditions are only five or six weeks away and the wet winter should be a distant memory.  Well at least that’s what every golfer is hoping for!

Former winner Pat Murray was one of the first golfers to sign up and formidable Limerick GC golfer is now playing off +3.8.  Plenty more plus golfers can be expected for the prestigious event which is now in it’s 11th year.

A one under par round of saw Cork’s Tom Cleary finish in fifth place after the first round of the European Senior Men’s Team Championships.  The competition is being held in Bulgaria at the Pravets Golf Club

Cleary got off to a great start with birdies on the 1st, 5th & 7th, although he did drop a shot on the 6th which saw him go out in -2.  He added another birdie on the 13th but two late bogies pegged him back to -1 and he’s in a seven way tie for fifth place.  Ireland performed very well overall, Arthur Pierce and Gareth McGimpsey both shot 69 to tie for second place and Maurice Kelly is one shot behind Cleary in 12th place.  John Mitchell and Adrian Morrow both had poor rounds today but have every chance of recovering tomorrow in the second round.

Cork has dual interest in the action in Bulgaria as Mahon’s Sean O’Leary is the Irish Team Captain.  After tomorrow’s round, all 20 teams will enter the matchplay phase which takes place over three days.
