To celebrate the first golf major of the year, Fota Island are running an open singles competition all weekend, with a major prize on offer for the winner. Starting today and running through to Sunday, the open singles will take place on the Deerpark course, the setting for the 2014 Irish Open. Entry for the competition is €50 per person and the Masters on television in the clubhouse it’s a great way to start the golfing season. The first prize for the Masters weekend competition is membership to the Fota Island Academy for the season. The prize which is valid until December includes access to the incredible practice facilities in the Academy, regular ball credit, and access to the Barryscourt nine holes that surround the extensive academy grounds. He might only be there since the start of 2017, however Ronan Collins has been busy heading up the Fota Island Academy’s new custom-fitting programme. Ronan’s appointment was just one step on a journey to refresh what was on offer from the tour standard teaching and practice facility. After upgrading their Trackman launch monitor systems, the Academy brought in club fitting systems from all of the major manufacturers. The Academy is now a one stop shop for any golfer looking to examine their game. Having launch the Academy in 2006, Fota Island reinvested in their teaching bays, and upgraded their analysis tools to incorporate the latest Trackman technology. The new Trackman 4 system can be used in the specialised indoor fitting bays or on the range, and also includes the putting analysis software making it an essential resource for the five-star resort. A new kids golf event is coming to Cork, the Munster event on the Irish Kids golf tour takes place in Fota Island in August. There are four provincial events planned for this year with Mount Juliet hosting the first event in early July. There’s also an “All-Ireland”
Fota Island have used the Oktober theme to launch a new golf and food offer for the month of October. For €59 golfers can avail of Golfest which includes 18 holes of golf, the special Golfest menu at the recently refurbished Clubhouse and a pint of Chieftan IPA. In addition to the offer, there are several prizes to be won, including a bumper trip to Germany. The golfer with the best score registered at the end of the month will win the top prize of a weekend trip for two to Munich including flights and accommodation. Other prizes include a weekend break for two at Fota Island Resort and also dinner for four at The Kingsley. The offer is available seven days a week, although tee times may be limited on certain days.
Fota Island won the AST Trophy in Cobh on Friday with a great performance to beat the 12 other teams. The players on the winning Fota Island team were: Ben Quigley, Cian Long, Evan Murphy, Ronan O’Connell and Shane Galvin. They had a three point win over Lee Valley and Monkstown took third place. Fota’s Evan Murphy had the best boys score while Catherine Cronin from Muskerry led the girls. The event which is now in it’s 4th year is sponsored by Adrian and Suzanne Tanzer.
Open week at Fora Island gets underway tomorrow, and although the week has been heaving booked there may be some late availability or cancellations for anyone hoping to get out on the the 2014 Irish Open Championship course.
