Robin Dawson and Cathal Butler pair off in the opening match and Peter O’Keeffe and John Hickey have been paired in the second match. Tough day at the office for Munster
Munster endured a tough opening day at the Interprovincial Championships at Fota Island today. Despite having local knowledge they struggled in the foursomes with Peter O’Keeffe and Cathal Butler takings Munster’s only win. Munster’s Gary O’Flaherty and Andrew McCormack scrambled for a very good half in their match, having been down earlier in the game. The singles were very disappointing for Munster with Andrew McCormack winning Munster’s only point. The experienced side will need to bounce back strongly tomorrow to give themselves a chance of winning on Wednesday.

Fota the perfect venue for tournament golf

Gary O’Flaherty & Geoff Lenehan pictured during practice today at Fota Island
Fota Island has proven itself to be the perfect tournament venue and next week it will host the GUI Senior Interprovincials. The famous Deerpark course has a long-standing association with top level tournament golf, hosting European Tour, Seniors Tour, ILGU PGA and GUI events. It’s a three time host for the Irish Open, in 2001 and 2002 it hosted the Murphy’s Irish Open and attracted record crowds as the Cork headquartered Brewery wrapped up their nine-year sponsorship of the competition. More recently Fota attracted 100,000 spectators during the 2014 Irish Open. As a championship venue, the Deerpark course in Fota has been lengthened but very little else has happened to the Jeff Howes designed course. Tightly cut fairways, strategic bunkering, and receptive true greens are all hallmarks of the Fota golf experience. While the vast majority of competitions held in Fota have been strokeplay, it’s also a wonderful course for matchplay. The signature par five 18th makes Continue reading

Two Cork clubs will be represented at the K Club today for the final of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Club Challenge. Both Fernhill and Fota Island will play in a fourball qualifier that will see the winning team qualify to play in the Irish Open Pro-Am next week. Pauline J McKechnie and Anthony O’Connell will represent Fota Island while Cathy McGuinness and Tony O’Donovan will head out in Fernhill colours. Killarney and Tipperary were the other successful qualifiers from the competition which was held in Dooks Golf Club two weeks ago.
22 teams from golf clubs across Ireland will do battle this today on the Smurfit Course at The K Club in the final of this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Club Challenge – with a chance to play alongside international golf superstars and world famous celebrities in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open Pro–Am at stake.
The qualifying events took place at five of Ireland’s top golf courses, including Powerscourt GC in County Wicklow, Hollystown GC in Dublin, Rockmount GC in Belfast, Dooks GC in County Kerry and Galway Bay Golf Club, all of whom donated their excellent facilities in support of this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

The theme for this year’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, hosted by the Rory Foundation at The K Club (May 19-22) is ‘History in the Making’ and that will certainly be the case when, for the first time ever, one lucky club team lines up to play alongside a top golfer in the prestigious Pro-Am competition. This initiative is part of Europe’s Race to Dubai Champion Rory McIlroy’s five-point plan to drum up support for the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open from Ireland’s 420 golf clubs, as well as helping to further develop the game of golf in Ireland. Mercy Hospital Golf Classic – 22nd April 2016
The Mercy Hospital will hold their annual fundraising golf classic in Fota Island Resort on Friday 22nd April next. The funds raised will go towards the building of the Mercy Cancer Care Centre

Brian Dunphy & Jack French
Teams of four cost €400. The Mercy Cancer CARE Centre is a community funded cancer centre providing hope and healing close to home. For the one in three of us who will be diagnosed with cancer in our lives, at the Mercy, we want to be sure that that news is told in the most supportive way possible. We are building a specialised Cancer Centre next to the Mercy Hospital that will provide a quiet safe place for patients and their family to help deal with bad news. Volunteer organiser, Jack French is joined by Brian Dunphy (former Board Chairman) in organising our annual Golf Classic. The Golf Classic could not happen without the knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm Jack and Brian so generously give.
