Pro Shop Challenge returns to Kinsale
The Pro Shop Challenge returns to Kinsale Golf Club this month, this will be the third staging of the very popular charity fundraising event. The brainchild of Ian Stafford and Cathal Butler, the challenge started in 2016 with Ian and Cathal partnering with Ger Broderick and John Murphy respectively. The amateurs took the win that year, the young guns took an early lead and never looked back as the the confidence of youth helped them to wrap up a win. Most importantly the event raised over €3,000 for Special Olympics. Delighted with their efforts in 2016, Butler and Murphy spearheaded the second staging of the event last year. This time however their wings were clipped. Broderick and Stafford used all of their experience and knowledge to take down the cocky amateurs, beating them by a clear margin in the end. Both professionals, who were involved first hand in the coaching and development of Butler and Murphy, were delighted to beat the amateurs in front of a huge crowd in Kinsale. Yet again the main winner was the charity partner. Marymount Hospice was the selected beneficiary and over €3,000 was handed over after the event. With the series score at 1-1, interest is building in this years competition. The event was first proposed by Ian Stafford who quickly enlisted a core team to turn the idea into an event. Keeping the event going is now the priority for Ian. “With the third edition this year, the fact that the pro’s managed to win last year has given the event this year a heightened sense of interest” said Ian Stafford. “The event needs to stay competitive to be a success. Murphy Earns Irish Cap
There was great news in Kinsale Golf Club earlier this week when John Murphy became the latest Corkman to earn full Irish honours. He has been selected in the six-man Irish team to compete in the European Amateur Team Championship in Germany in two weeks’ time. Murphy was almost a certain pick given his recent form. He won the St Andrews Links Trophy earlier this month, and last week he reached the quarter-finals of The Amateur Championship in Royal Aberdeen.
The Louisville student represented Ireland at the Boys Home Internationals in 2016, and gaining a full international cap this year was definitely a target. “Being named to the Irish senior team is very exciting” said Murphy after the announcement. “I still remember going to Carton House for the champions dinner when I was young and seeing the Irish panels. Bantry Bay through to Pierce Purcell finals
Bantry Bay had a great win in the Pierce Purcell recently, they beat Monkstown in the South Munster final after both teams had come through their local qualifiers. Monkstown took an early lead in the final but Bantry battled and refused to let Monkstown run away with an early win. The match was played in Kinsale and the course provided both teams with a tough test. The new provision for scotch foursomes (both golfers drive off with the best shot selected) saved teams on several occasions as the narrow fairways tested both teams. Although down in the first and third matches, Bantry were buoyed by a win for Dominic Wilson and Pat Cronin over Colm Murphy and Eoin McNamara on the 13th hole. Conchur O’Sullivan and Ger Conway were two down with four to play, but they turned their match around to beat Eddie O’Sullivan and Niall Keely on the 18th green. Monkstown Through in AIG Senior Cup
Monkstown were the first club to book their place in the Munster finals in Thurles, marking the third time in four years that they have reached the finals of the AIG Senior Cup.
16 teams started in Cork Golf Club on Saturday morning, and two rounds later there were just four. Bandon faced Kinsale and Mallow were up against Monkstown this morning. The two semi-finals were close matches, with the Bandon Kinsale derby needing three extra holes to decide the winner. Bandon’s Ger Tobin was the hero as he won the 21st hole to take Bandon through to area final.
For team manager Pat O’Keeffe and his assistant Martin Walsh it marks another successful start to a campaign. Last year the lost at the semi-final stage so there’s no doubt that they’ll appreciate making it through to the Munster finals. British Am Dreams still strong for Murphy & Sugrue
John Murphy
John Murphy and James Sugrue both came through the first matchplay round of the British Open yesterday, propelling them into the final 32 with hope increasing of an extended run in Royal Aberdeen. There was a bit of a struggle for both golfers yesterday, Sugrue took a slight lead in his match early on but he had to wait until the 19th before he finally dispatched Australia’s Michael Kyle.
John Murphy too had an interesting round. He level par after three holes but found himself two down. He was two under through six and was still one down. The tide did turn for Murph, by the 13th he had a three hole lead and he added another win on 14. He lost the 15th Continue reading
