Strong Munster Team named for Fota Island Interpro’s

Munster Captain Phil Cooney has named the Munster team to play in the Senior Interprovincials next week at Fota Island Golf Club.  Cooney, along with selectors John Carroll and Michael Coote waited until after the AIG Senior Cup qualifiers last weekend to finalise their team, who will take on the three provinces from 4th – 6th July.  Munster finished in second place last year in Rosapenna and five members of that team were again selected.  Gary O’Flaherty and Robin Dawson took two of the four automatic spots available through the Order of Merit, with John Hickey, Gary O’Flaherty and Geoff Linehan taking three of the four selectors places.  Newcomers on the team include Kinsale’s Cathal Butler and Castletroy’s Andrew McCormack.  Both McCormack and Butler has great starts to the season and both won counting events on the order of merit.  Peter O’Keeffe makes a return to the team after Continue reading

Gary O’Flaherty’s performances in Castletroy, Cork and Ballybunion this month will have moved him up the Munster Senior Order of Merit.  There are four automatic places in the team from the Order of Merit, and three of them look like going to Cathal Butler, Andrew McCormack and Gary O’Flaherty.  Mark Shanahan, John Hickey and James Sugrue are all battling for the last automatic place, as are Waterford duo Eanna Griffin and Robin Dawson.  There are plenty of points on offer over the coming weeks.  The East of Ireland takes place next week and the Tralee Scratch Cup, the Connacht Strokeplay and the British Amateur all take place in June.  Captain Phil Cooney will have a tough job selecting his four picks as all of the above along with Pat Murray, Ian O’Rourke, Peter O’Keeffe and Continue reading

Fota Island ready for 2016 Season

Fota-Sign_1Fota Island will get their competitive golfing season up and running on the 13th March when they host their Senior Scratch Cup.  The competition is being held over 18 holes and they have again partnered with Top Golfer, ensuring that there will be some great prizes on offer.  The senior scratch cup has generally marked the start of the competitive season in Cork and a full time sheet is expected as golfers travel from all over Munster.  In fact golfers could travel from further afield this year, Fota Island are hosting the GUI Senior Interprovincials so you can expect to see golfers from all four provinces playing on the Deerpark course between now and July.  The entry fee is €40 and anyone interested in playing Continue reading
