Karl Bornemann (Douglas Golf Club) finished in third place in the European Senior Men’s Championship in Spain. The Douglas member was in fourth place going into the final round, but a one under par 71 saw him jump one place to finish in third place. The Douglas member shot an opening round 73 and he was going well in the second round until he had four consecutive bogies. He still signed for a 75 to hold 4th place going into the final round. Today Bornemann bogied the second hole but birdied the fifth and ninth to get into the red. He went on par the back nine and claim third place in his first time playing in the event? Bornemann has been working on his game over the winter, and he’s also been working on his fitness with Peter O’Keeffe.

Tom Cleary added another prestigious title to his collection today, the Irish Seniors Amateur Open. The three time Munster Seniors Champion won his first national seniors title at Ardee Golf club after a final round 72 left him three ahead of the field. Cleary was tied for the lead going into the final round, and there were nine other players within two shots of the lead. Just like the Munster Seniors in Waterville, Cleary played very steady golf while all around him dropped shots on another testing day in Ardee.
The Cork Golf Club member opened on Wednesday with a three over par 74 to lie two shots off the lead. He followed on Thursday with another 74 that saw him lead alongside England’s Andrew Carman. The English international carded a four over par 75 in his final round to fall out of contention. Cleary had a testing start, he bogied the 2nd & 3rd holes but he added two birdies at 6 and 8 to reach the turn on level par. Two more pars followed and at that stage Tom was three shots ahead of Carman. Cleary bogies the 15th but he was three shots ahead of the leader in the club house. Cork’s Tom Cleary shots a second consecutive 74 to lead after two rounds at the Irish Seniors Open in Ardee today. Cleary was in 8th place after the first round, but he was only two shots off the three way tie for the lead. He followed up with another 74 today to tie with England’s Andrew Carman. Cleary was happy with his performance, this was his first competitive outing since representing GB&I in the Concession Cup in Florida: “It was very windy out there to be honest, very hard to keep the ball straight but I’m happy enough”.
The competition still has a very crowded leaderboard after 36 holes. There are three players just one shot behind and Tramore’s John Mitchell is in a group of six players who are two shots behind. Three more Cork golfers made the cut for the final round, Doneraile’s Michael Quirke is four shots off the lead and Peter Cowley and George Mellerick also made it through. Cork’s Tom Cleary recorded his second win in three days as Ireland beat Wales in the Senior Mens Home Internationals today. Cleary was a member of Sean O’Leary’s team, and was competing in his second competition in just over two weeks for the Irish Seniors team.

The competition was held in Crowborough Beacon GC in East Sussex. Ireland lost to England on day one but followed that with impressive wins over Scotland and Wales. Although Ireland topped the three way tie with the greatest number of match wins, Scotland retain the title as holders.. The rain affected competition saw the foursomes cancelled on the first two days and Ireland’s triumphed today with 7-3 win when all ten matches were played.
Mahon and Munster representative Sean O’Leary masterminded a third successive win for Ireland in the European Senior Men’s Team Championship. The competition was held in Bulgaria in Pravets Golf Club. While Team Captain O’Leary planned the campaign, he was helped on the course by Cork’s Tom Cleary. The current Munster Senior’s champion went through the 36 hole strokeplay qualifier in -4, second in a field of over 120 golfers.
Ireland finished the strokeplay phase in first place, 24 strokes clear of second place. In the matchplay phase Cleary was partnered with Tramore’s John Mitchell as Ireland’s foursomes pair. They won their quarter-final and semi-final but lost out in their final match against Italy.
In a tense final against Italy that went down to the wire, all eyes were on Kelly when Garth McGimpsey squared the match at two points apiece. Italy had taken the foursomes point while Adrian Morrow was beaten 4&2 in the singles. However Arthur Pierse led the Irish revival, romping home with a 7&6 victory in the top singles match. His old sparring partner, McGimpsey, followed him in, taking the back match 3&2 and that left Kelly fighting for the championship on the 18th green against Vincenzo Sita. The Naas veteran held his nerve to deliver the decisive point.
Cork’s Tom Cleary partnered John Mitchell (Tramore) in the quarter final of the European Senior Mens Team Championship an the pair racked up a 4&3 in their match against Switzerland. Maurice Kelly and Adrian Morrow clocked up two singles wins as Ireland advanced into the semi-final. Ireland finished the 36 hole qualifying phase 24 shots clear of the nearest challenger, taking the top seed spot by a considerable margin.

Cleary had five birdies and three bogies in his three under par round, and is second in a field of over 120 European golfers. Arthur Pierce matched Cleary’s score to lead the qualifying part of the competition on -6. Bangor’s Gareth McGimpsey is also on -4 after shooting a 71 and Adrian Morrow shot the low round of the day (68) in a 12 shot swing from the first round.

Cleary got off to a great start with birdies on the 1st, 5th & 7th, although he did drop a shot on the 6th which saw him go out in -2. He added another birdie on the 13th but two late bogies pegged him back to -1 and he’s in a seven way tie for fifth place. Ireland performed very well overall, Arthur Pierce and Gareth McGimpsey both shot 69 to tie for second place and Maurice Kelly is one shot behind Cleary in 12th place. John Mitchell and Adrian Morrow both had poor rounds today but have every chance of recovering tomorrow in the second round.
Cork has dual interest in the action in Bulgaria as Mahon’s Sean O’Leary is the Irish Team Captain. After tomorrow’s round, all 20 teams will enter the matchplay phase which takes place over three days.
