13 year old Daniel O’Sullivan was the hero for Mallow as his win on the 18th sealed a 4-3 win for Mallow against Kinsale in the Fred Daly Trophy final. The final was a titanic affair with one match going to the 21st and another going to the 20th. Kinsale got early wins from James Bohan and Mark Healy and Mallow got an early point from Eoin Ahern.

Gary Ward’s match was finally settled on the 20th, when he beat Mallow’s Ed Walsh with a birdie. Eoin Ahern added appoint for Mallow to make the score 3-2. Conor Roche and John Murphy had a great battle, and it took 21 holes for Roche see off Murphy’s challenge with a birdie on the par five 3rd. With the score at 3-3 the match was to be decided by the last match between Mallow’s O’Sullivan and Kinsale’s Bruce Matthews. The match was level through 16 but O’Sullivan went up 1 up on the 17th. A par on the 18th was enough to give young O’Sullivan the win and send the Pennant back to Mallow for the second time in three years.
The course in Gold Coast was in great condition and although the rain held off the wind had a big impact on the matches. Both Cork sides had good semi-final wins. Mallow closed out their match against West Waterford early thanks to wins from Ed Walsh, Greg Barrett, Liam Dowling and Conor Roche, with none of the four matches reaching the 18th. Kinsale had a tougher path to the final against a strong Limerick side. Mark Healy and Eric Rumley put points on the board for Kinsale while Ciaran Vaughan won on the 19th for Limerick. John Murphy won on the 18th to give Kinsale their third point and the winning point came from James Bohan when he won on the 16th green.

Mr John Moloughney, Chairman Munster Branch congratulated the winners and thanked all of the teams for a great day of golf. He thanked the course and staff for providing an excellent course, and he thanked the Tournament Director Kevin Murray and referees John Fennessy and Peter English. He complimented all of the supporters, around 150 spectators were watching the final match as it reached the 18th green. Mallow now go on to represent Munster in the All Ireland Finals at Moyola Park in Derry later this month.
