The UCC Staff Golf Society recently won the Inter-Varsity tournament, beating near neighbours Cork Institute of Technology in a tight battle. The competition took place in Ballykisteen Golf Club in Tipperary and ten colleges took part. The fourball format see’s four cards counting from the five pairs, however there was a tie between UCC and CIT when the best four cards had both teams level. The tournament was decided on the fifth card and UCC took the title by one shot. The winning team was led by Captain Rosemary O’Connor and managed by Willie Weir. Rosemary O’Connor and Alan Dobson carded the leading score with 46 points, with Maurice Conway and Kevin Barrett close behind with 43. Eddic McCarthy and Dan Walsh added 43 points to the team total and Mark Rea and Richard Studdert also had 43 points. The all-important fifth card came in from Don Walshe and Barrie Curley, their 37 points was decisive as it beat the CIT fifth card and gave UCC the title. Continue reading

Good Recoveries from Dooley & McNamara
Padraig Dooley and Cian McNamara bounced back today from disappointing opening rounds at the PGA National Championship in Burnham & Berrow GC in England. Both carded poor first rounds, Dooley sot an 80 while McNamara recorded an 84. Fresh from his appearance in Royal County Down, McNamara bounced back on Wednesday with a 72, while Dooley signed for a 74. Both lie around halfway down the leaderboard but unfortunately they both missed the cut for the final two rounds as they were outside the top 50.
Waterville’s David Higgins leads the Irish charge, rounds of 74 and 72 have him tied for 6th place. Liam Bowler (Wexford GC) was the only other Irish golfer to make the cut.
Top 4 Finish for Shanahan

Castlemartyr’s Mark Shanahan finished tied 4th in the rain affected East of Ireland Championship. Shanahan was in touch of the lead after the first and second rounds and a final round 73 saw him finish 4th but seven shots behind the winner. The event took place in Baltry and while they got through Saturday and Sunday, only 18 of the 36 holes scheduled for Monday took place. The decision to cancel the final 18 holes marks the first occasion in the 75 year history that the title was awarded after 54 holes. Stuart Grehan (Tullamore) was the runaway leader from the very start with an opening 67 followed by a 68. Although he shot 76 in his final round he still had a five shot margin of victory over the field.

Tough Second Day for O’Sullivan in Wales
Denis O’Sullivan had a tough second round in Wales today, the first round leader had two double bogies on the back nine but he finished with a birdie on the 18th to leave himself tied for 5th on level par. The three over par 73 leaves O’Sullivan four shots off the lead, Ian Woosnam holds a share of the lead thanks to 66 in the second round 66. Continue reading
Lee Valley advance to Bruen Munster Finals
Lee Valley were the first Cork club to book their place in the AIG Cups & Shields Munster finals. Their Jimmy Bruen team had come through from Blarney where they won three matches including a venue final against the hosts. It was Waterrock’s first time to host a GUI area final and the course was in excellent condition for the match. Many would consider the back nine in Waterrock to provide the tougher challenge but the front nine proved decisive as both sides varied between birdie and bogey golf to win, halve and even lose holes. Hallissey wins Douglas Senior Scratch Cup

Muskerry’s Daniel Hallissey scooped the Douglas Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday, thanks to an impressive 69 in his second round. Hallissey was a member of the very Muskerry’s double All Ireland winning team in 2007 when he won Junior Cup and Jimmy Bruen Shield titles. He added to that last year he was part of the winning Muskerry Barton Shield team in Carton house, and he now adds his name to the prestigious Douglas Senior Scratch Cup. After shooting a morning 77, Hallissey added to that with a bogey on the 4th to leave him on +6 after 22 holes. He bounced back however, birdies on 9, 12, 15 and 18 saw him storm back up the leaderboard. Continue reading
Mixed Round for Monkstown’s McNamara
Cian McNamara (Monkstown GC), playing in his third Irish Open cut a frustrated figure after carding a four over 75 in the first round at Royal County Down. The 29th annual Rotary/MSD Charity Golf Am-Am, Bandon’s local charity golfing fundraiser, takes place again this July at Bandon Golf Club. Bandon Golf Club plays host to two days of golf with Ladies Day taking place on Wednesday, July 1st and men’s team participating on Friday, July 3rd. Having raised over a quarter of a million for various charities and community groups in Cork to date, this year’s competition is aiming for its largest attendance ever with a target of 150 teams and raising €15,000 across the two dates. Fota Beat Mahon in Fred Daly Trophy
There was great excitement in Douglas on Sunday evening as Fota Island overcame Mahon in an exciting Fred Daly Trophy quarter-final match. The match was a repeat of last year’s competition when Mahon came out on top. The course in Douglas was in great condition for the match although heavy rain and strong winds during the first hour of play hampered the golfers. Heading into the back nine the match was very balanced with neither side having a strong advantage in any of the seven matches. Continue reading
