Cork Golfers in Top 20 in Assistants Championship
Mallow’s Ciaran McKenna is the best placed Cork golfer at the halfway-stage of the PGA Assistants Championship in Nuremore. After carding an opening +4 round of 75, he added a level par 71 in the afternoon to take a share of 7th place. McKenna had five birdies and five bogies in the afternoon.
Charleville’s Frank Holly also shot 75 in the first round and was heading for a great afternoon score – only to record a 7 on the par 4 18th hole. The triple bogey gave Holly a second round total of 74 and a share of tenth place. Former Mahon team-mates Davey Barry (Douglas) and Alan Gleeson (Castlemartyr) are both inside the top twenty after 36 holes. Both carded opening rounds of 75, and the both added 76’s in the afternoon. Despite the fact that all four golfers comfortably made the cut (+17), hopes of a win tomorrow will be measured as leader Joe Dillon (Headfort Golf Club) is seven shots ahead of McKenna on -3.
Kinsale advance to Fred Daly Trophy Final
Kinsale booked their place in the Fred Daly Trophy area-final on Saturday last with a comprehensive win over Blarney. Kinsale have been fancied from the start of the competition, although they were close to being knocked out by Douglas in the last round. Kinsale book place in Pierce Purcell Munster Finals
Kinsale Golf Club booked their place in the Pierce Purcell Munster finals last week with a dramatic play-off win over Cobh. The area final took place at Lee Valley which was in great condition for the South Munster decider. Kinsale had qualified from the qualifier that they hosted and Cobh came through in the Fermoy venue qualifier. Kinsale’s Bernard O’Keeffe and Diarmuid O’Brien put an early point on the board when they won their match 7/5, beating Cobh’s Donal Feen and Adam Geaney who obviously had an off day. The only other match of the day to finish in regulation was the final match. Cobh were dormie four but didn’t close out the match until the 18th, and the match was level a one point each. UCC Staff GS win Intervarsity Title
The UCC Staff Golf Society recently won the Inter-Varsity tournament, beating near neighbours Cork Institute of Technology in a tight battle. The competition took place in Ballykisteen Golf Club in Tipperary and ten colleges took part. The fourball format see’s four cards counting from the five pairs, however there was a tie between UCC and CIT when the best four cards had both teams level. The tournament was decided on the fifth card and UCC took the title by one shot. The winning team was led by Captain Rosemary O’Connor and managed by Willie Weir. Rosemary O’Connor and Alan Dobson carded the leading score with 46 points, with Maurice Conway and Kevin Barrett close behind with 43. Eddic McCarthy and Dan Walsh added 43 points to the team total and Mark Rea and Richard Studdert also had 43 points. The all-important fifth card came in from Don Walshe and Barrie Curley, their 37 points was decisive as it beat the CIT fifth card and gave UCC the title. Continue reading
Good Recoveries from Dooley & McNamara
Padraig Dooley and Cian McNamara bounced back today from disappointing opening rounds at the PGA National Championship in Burnham & Berrow GC in England. Both carded poor first rounds, Dooley sot an 80 while McNamara recorded an 84. Fresh from his appearance in Royal County Down, McNamara bounced back on Wednesday with a 72, while Dooley signed for a 74. Both lie around halfway down the leaderboard but unfortunately they both missed the cut for the final two rounds as they were outside the top 50.
Waterville’s David Higgins leads the Irish charge, rounds of 74 and 72 have him tied for 6th place. Liam Bowler (Wexford GC) was the only other Irish golfer to make the cut.
