Dave O’Donovan (Muskerry) has been selected on the Munster Senior Inter-Provincial team, and his selection was warmly welcomed by many who feel it’s a well deserved reward for his good play in 2015.  O’Donovan had a very strong start to the season and won the prestigious Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup in April.  Although he was limited to only a few order of merit events, Munster Captain Phil Cooney obviously liked what he saw when he watched O’Donovan in Lee Valley and later in Cork GC at the Munster Strokeplay.  A happy Dave said: “I’m thrilled to bits obviously.  Dues to a few family occasions I couldn’t play as much as I would have liked to in May.  But I played well in Shannon and the Munster Strokeplay and the game it still good”.  O’Donovan along with the team and management will aim to retain their title in Rossapena (Donegal) in early July.   Continue reading

Kinsale Golf Club booked their place in the Pierce Purcell Munster finals last week with a dramatic play-off win over Cobh.  The area final took place at Lee Valley which was in great condition for the South Munster decider.   Kinsale had qualified from the qualifier that they hosted and Cobh came through in the Fermoy venue qualifier.  Kinsale’s Bernard O’Keeffe and Diarmuid O’Brien put an early point on the board when they won their match 7/5, beating Cobh’s Donal Feen and Adam Geaney who obviously had an off day.  The only other match of the day to finish in regulation was the final match.  Cobh were dormie four but didn’t close out the match until the 18th, and the match was level a one point each.  Continue reading

Lee Valley advance to Bruen Munster Finals

CGN_Jimmy Bruen_21st May 2015-42Lee Valley were the first Cork club to book their place in the AIG Cups & Shields Munster finals.  Their Jimmy Bruen team had come through from Blarney where they won three matches including a venue final against the hosts.  It was Waterrock’s first time to host a GUI area final and the course was in excellent condition for the match.  Many would consider the back nine in Waterrock to provide the tougher challenge but the front nine proved decisive as both sides varied between birdie and bogey golf to win, halve and even lose holes. Fota Beat Mahon in Fred Daly Trophy

There was great excitement in Douglas on Sunday evening as Fota Island overcame Mahon in an exciting Fred Daly Trophy quarter-final match.  The match was a repeat of last year’s competition when Mahon came out on top.  The course in Douglas was in great condition for the match although heavy rain and strong winds during the first hour of play hampered the golfers.  Heading into the back nine the match was very balanced with neither side having a strong advantage in any of the seven matches.
