Fota Island cause an upset by beating Kinsale in Fred Daly Trophy

Fota Island cased an upset this evening when they beat Munster finalists Kinsale in the Fred Trophy area semi final. Cork Golf Club was the venue, and twelve months ago Kinsale had a comprehensive win over Fota at the same stage of the competition. Fota Island started strongly with Cillian Moloney beating John Murphy 6&5. Kinsale’s Mark Healy balanced the match when he won his match against Josh Hogan on the 16th. The 14th green proved crucial as Davis Howard won a second point for Fota, winning 5&4. Things were looking good for Fota at that stage, Garan Manley was losing to Daniel O’Flaherty but Fota’sRonan O’Connell was in the lead in his match and it was O’Connell who closed out his match first. He won 5&4 on the 14th meaning the final match was called in.
Fota Island will now go on to play Munster champions Mallow in the South Munster final.

Fota Island 3.5-1.5 Kinsale

Irish Call Ups for Cork Golfers

There was a great deal of excitement yesterday as four Cork golfers were called up for international duty. Mairead Martin, Valerie Clancy and Rachel Thompson were all selected to represent Ireland at the European Girls Team Championship. All three golfers have had very strong starts to the season and the selection is justified on their recent performances. The competition takes place in Oslo over five days in early July.
Kinsale’s Cathal Butler was selected to play in the World University Championship which takes place in France next month. The Maynooth University student is studying for his first year exams at present so is not playing in the Castletroy Scratch Cup this weekend. Castletroy have put a huge effort into their Bank of Ireland sponsored event, and they have attracted a top class field which takes place over 36 holes on Saturday
Charleville CBS win North Cork Schools
The North Cork Schools’ Championship that took place in Mallow Golf Club yesterday. This years winners were Charleville CBS who won by two shots from Davis College, Mallow on a gross score of 236. The format was a four man team with the best three gross scores to count. The best nett individual prize was won by Greg Barrett (Davis College) with 69 nett off four handicap. This was also the best gross score on the day. The Charleville team consisted of Johnathan O’Brien, Cathal O’Carroll, Santiago JuanQuera and Jordan Boles and were managed by Niall Corcoran. The event was organised by Eoghan Long.
Fred Daly wins for Mallow & Cobh, Country Clubs Results
The last remaining quarter finals of the Fred Daly Trophy took place over the weekend at Douglas and Monkstown. Mallow played their second match and again won on a 4-1 scoreline. The Munster champions beat Youghal on Sunday, and for the second week running they won without losing a match.

Murphy selected for Fairhaven Trophy
Kinsale’s John Murphy has been selected on the Irish Boys team that will travel to the Fairhaven Trophy. Murphy is one of a team of four from Ireland and this will mark his second international event.
Murphy has had a good start to the season, he played well in France and he also made the cut last weekend at the Lee Valley Senior Scratch Cup. The leaving cert student is a busy man, he was at a training camp with the Irish Boys this weekend and he’ll head off to North West England. In addition to this, Murphy also played with the Kinasle Fred Daly trophy team last weekend – twice! Kinsale saw off Douglas in the first round, and then they beat Blarney in the second round. They will face Fota Island in the South Munster semi-final.
The Fairhaven Trophy is a 72 hole strokeplay event that takes place over three days. Fairhaven is a championship links course next to the Open Championship venue, Lytham & St Annes. 150 golfers will take part in the competition. It’s the first time that a Cork golfer has been selected since Mallow’s James Sugrue went in 2013 & 2014. Sugrue finished in 10th place in 2014 .

Munster champions Mallow had an impressive 4-1 win over Mahon in their first round match which was played at Monkstown on Sunday. They will go on to face Youghal in the second round.
