Final Defeat for Patrician Academy Mallow

Patrician Academy Mallow had an agonising defeat in the final of the Irish Schools Senior Championship today.  The finals were hosted in Athlone Golf Club and Mallow had beaten Scoil na mBraithre, Kilkenny in their morning semi-final.  Kilkenny’s Mark Power, fresh from his success at the Peter McEvoy Trophy in England, won the opening match for Scoil na mBraithre and his brother, Kevin, added a second point. However Mallow came good with wins for Chris Taylor, Eoin Aherne and Daniel O’Sullivan.

Presentation College, Athenry were in control of the final early on but they had to sweat at the finish as Mallow came back strong.  In end it was O’Connor who sealed it for the Galway side although victory didn’t arrive until the second extra hole as Mallows’s Eoin Aherne took him as far as the 20th.  Louis O’Hara and Jack Tuohy had put Athenry in a healthy position by winning the opening games but Chris Taylor kept Mallow alive when he edged out Cillian Lawless by one hole. Daniel O’Sullivan and Jack Lally were all square through 18 in the anchor leg so that let James O’Connor with the chance to seal it and he secured the winning point on the second extra hole.
