There was no joy for Cork’s PGA professionals in Adare Manor GC last week as the tour drew to a close. The 104th Irish PGA Championship took place over five days last week with Wednesday’s pro-am setting the tone for the week. Turner and McNamara Taste Success
Niall Turner continued his good run of form when he sailed through the European Tour first qualifying stage in France last week. Turner was in action in Hardelot in north eastern France, a venue where he has played well in the past. He carded a 273 total (-11) for his four rounds to finish in third place just 3 shots off the lead. Turner recorded his first win in Asia back in July and he has been in fine form since. East Cork Ladies Bag Three Pennants
East Cork Ladies had three great wins in Limerick last weekend and in doing so they won three Munster pennants and booked their places in the All Ireland Finals. The Junior Foursomes team were first out on Friday afternoon and they had a good win over Ross with Mary B Walsh & Breda McCarthy and Caroline O’Connor and Mary Morrison winning their matches, while Sel O’Leary & Eileen Dorgan’s match was called in. Sugrue Wins Cork Pro-Am
Killarney’s Danny Sugrue was one of three golfers tied for the lead at the Etihad Airways Cork GC Pro-Am held on Monday. Sugrue stated in a blaze, posting birdies the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th holes to lie four under through six holes. Despite posting bogeys at 9 and 10, he went on to birdie 11 and 12 to remain at four under. Bogeys on 15 and 18 saw him finish on -2 and a share of the winner’s purse. Cork’s Niall Turner won his first Asian Tour event yesterday when he won the Linc Group Jakarta Classic in Indonesia. It was his first tour event since May and the Corkman came back with a bang. Denis O’Sullivan made a welcome return to the headlines over the weekend when he finished second in the European Senior Tour event in Switzerland. The newly formed Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI) were out in force last week at the Irish Open, giving over 800 free lessons in their customised driving range at the Irish Open. The CGI were also in Cork earlier in the week to host a business planning seminar for golf clubs. Almost 150 amateur golfers got a chance to tee it up with tour professionals yesterday as the Irish Open Pro-Am took place in Fota. Play got underway at 7.50am and even at that stage the sun was out and temperatures were hitting 20 degrees. The attendance at the pro-am was an estimated 7,000 spectators which ranks highly on the European Tour schedule. The majority of places in the pro-am are reserved for the event sponsors but there were a few golfers that secured their place thanks to qualifying competitions. Continue reading
