East Cork Ladies had three great wins in Limerick last weekend and in doing so they won three Munster pennants and booked their places in the All Ireland Finals. The Junior Foursomes team were first out on Friday afternoon and they had a good win over Ross with Mary B Walsh & Breda McCarthy and Caroline O’Connor and Mary Morrison winning their matches, while Sel O’Leary & Eileen Dorgan’s match was called in. It was a great start for the club to have one Munster title in the bag. The senior foursomes team were also in action on Friday and in a very tight match they lost out to a stong Killarney side. The Kerry club only won the match on the 19th after Deirdre O’Mahony and Sarah O’Brien had won a point for East Cork.
On Saturday East Cork had three teams in action in the Junior, Intermediate and Minor Cups. The intermediate cup team faced local rivals Muskerry and Emma Curtin and Marie O’Sullivan put two early points on the board for East Cork. Siobhan Maher and Jennifer Kilcoyne countered for Muskerry at the expense of Phil Sheehan and Breda O’Farrell. Sel O’Leary secured the deciding point for East Cork on the 17th green and the trophy and pennant were heading for Midleton. East Cork also had success in the Minor Cup. The team made up of Claire Adams, Darina O’Brien, Kate Daly, Ruth Evans and Frances O’Brien had a 3/2 win over Ballybunion. The score-line doesn’t tell the full story however as it took three additional holes for the third match to be decided, Kate Daly eventually securing the winning point.
The Junior Cup was a dramatic affair and unfortunately it didn’t go East Cork’s way. Playing a good Dooks side, the match was competitive evenly balanced with only one match finishing early and that was on the 17th. Two matches went to 20th hole and both were won by Dook’s. That was enough to tip the balance in favour of the Kerry side and East Cork lost out. The East Cork Junior team golfers were Grace McGrath, Mairead NiMhurchu, Jessie Anthony, Deirdre O’Brien and Tara McCarthy. East Cork now have three teams going forward to the All-Ireland finals. They had an added incentive to do well as the ILGU All Ireland finals take place in Monsktown this year. The finals take place from 24th -27th September and the fixtures will be available next week.
The Douglas Fred Daly team were in action in Co Down on Tuesday in the All Ireland Finals. The Douglas team had a made a name for themselves after several dramatic last gasp wins but unfortunately for the young Cork side they lost out in their semi-final against Galway. Carton House went on to beat Galway in the final to claim the national title. Kanturk will hold their Senior Scratch Cup on Saturday and the final senior scratch cup of the season takes place on Sunday 21st September when Castlemartyr hold their final major competition of the year.
