Peter O’Keeffe in action in the South of Ireland in Lahinch last year

Peter O’Keeffe’s two week marathon is finally over, but after eight rounds of golf in five days the Douglas member came agonisingly close to claiming his second major amateur title.  This morning O’Keeffe dispatched Robert Brazill on the 17th green to reach the final of the North of Ireland in Portrush.  This afternoon he faced England’s Arron Edwards-Hill in the final.  Having spent last week in Lahinch caddying for Robin Dawson, O’Keeffe was onto day 11 of his golfing marathon.  He was heading into his 14th round this afternoon, and he was determined to give it his all in pursuit of the famous provincial title.

Barton Shield win for Kinsale

AIG Barton Shield Munster Final 2018It may have taken Kinsale over 100 years to win their first Munster pennant, but it was a much shorter wait for their second.  Just four weeks after winning the Jimmy Bruen Shield, Kinsale doubled their haul when they won the Munster Final of the AIG Barton Shield in Thurles last Sunday.  On paper Kinsale were up against it, in the semi-final they faced Dungarvan who had won the AIG Senior Cup title the day before.  In the semi-final they were up against it when Dungarvan stretched their lead the three holes early in the back nine.  The four Kinsale golfers battled back, and two birdies on the 17th turned the match to send Kinsale into the final.  After a quick break it was back to the first tee in Thurles to face off against a fancied Continue reading

No Joy for Mallow or Cork in Tralee, AIG Cups & Shields Munster Finals

AIG Senior Cup Munster Finals 2017, Saturday 12th August 2017There was no joy for Cork clubs in Tralee on Saturday as both Cork and Mallow exited at the semi-final stage of the Munster finals.  Mallow were in action in the AIG Senior Cup and for a while it looked like they would beat Limerick in their semi-final.  Paul McCarthy and James Sugrue led from the front and both recorded impressive wins, McCarthy won 3&2 while Sugrue won on the 14th.  Conor Dowling lost match, as did Brian Attridge meaning the result would be decided by Adam Boland’s match with Limerick’s Justin Kehoe.  They were all square on the 15th but Kehoe won the 16th to go one up.  Boland made a huge six foot putt on the 17th to avoid losing and a great birdie on the 18th meant that the match went on to the 19th.  Both players found the fairway on the additional hole and the advantage swung Continue reading
