AIG Jimmy Bruen Shield :: Munster Finals 2018
Bantry Bay through to Pierce Purcell finals
Bantry Bay had a great win in the Pierce Purcell recently, they beat Monkstown in the South Munster final after both teams had come through their local qualifiers. Monkstown took an early lead in the final but Bantry battled and refused to let Monkstown run away with an early win. The match was played in Kinsale and the course provided both teams with a tough test. The new provision for scotch foursomes (both golfers drive off with the best shot selected) saved teams on several occasions as the narrow fairways tested both teams. Although down in the first and third matches, Bantry were buoyed by a win for Dominic Wilson and Pat Cronin over Colm Murphy and Eoin McNamara on the 13th hole. Conchur O’Sullivan and Ger Conway were two down with four to play, but they turned their match around to beat Eddie O’Sullivan and Niall Keely on the 18th green. That made it 2-0 and meant Bantry only needed one more match. The problem was that they were down in the final three matches. The win would come in match three. Despite missing Continue reading

Cups & Shields set for Changes
In a bold move the GUI have just published a wave of proposals that could see major changes to the Cups and Shields. The final decision on the proposals will also go back to club via the Provincial delegate meetings which take place next month. Clubs are now being asked to discuss proposed changes to Junior Cup, the Jimmy Bruen and Purcell Purcell competitions in the biggest shake up in three decades. With over 40,000 golfers taking part in the national competitions each year, the proposals represent the outputs of a survey involving 4,000 golfers. The survey highlighted the significant need for reform, and a full review took place over the past six months to build a comprehensive set of proposals which give clubs the opportunity to amend the main inter-club handicap competitions. While various club motions through the years have been defeated, there is a feeling now that a number of key central proposals will have a great chance of being passed. The first proposal is to reduce the handicap limit for the Junior Cup from 5 to 4, and this is being proposed by three Continue reading
No Joy for Mallow or Cork in Tralee, AIG Cups & Shields Munster Finals
There was no joy for Cork clubs in Tralee on Saturday as both Cork and Mallow exited at the semi-final stage of the Munster finals. Mallow were in action in the AIG Senior Cup and for a while it looked like they would beat Limerick in their semi-final. Paul McCarthy and James Sugrue led from the front and both recorded impressive wins, McCarthy won 3&2 while Sugrue won on the 14th. Conor Dowling lost match, as did Brian Attridge meaning the result would be decided by Adam Boland’s match with Limerick’s Justin Kehoe. They were all square on the 15th but Kehoe won the 16th to go one up. Boland made a huge six foot putt on the 17th to avoid losing and a great birdie on the 18th meant that the match went on to the 19th. Both players found the fairway on the additional hole and the advantage swung Continue reading
