Keane wins second Bruen Youths Title

Barry Keane chalked up a second Bruen Youths title at Muskerry recently, joining a elite list of two time winners.  The event has been running for almost 40 years and commemorates Jimmy Bruen’s Muskerry legacy.

Keane first won the title in 2021, and backed up that performance with an very impressive 68 to win by five shots.  The Munster Barton Shield winner was delighted to add his name to the trophy for a second time.  “Winning it again was really special. The first time felt like a breakthrough because I was so young, but this one came with more expectation, which added some pressure” said Keane after his win.  £To have my name on the trophy alongside some big names is something I’m really proud of, and none of this would’ve happened without the great coaching I’ve received from Fred Twomey over the past few years.”

Keane was delighted with the way he played, he led from the front and stay out in front to win by an impressive margin.  “I played really solid golf overall, getting off to a quick start with a 32 (-4) on the front nine, which gave me Continue reading

In the second round Egan never let go of his lead.  Again he had seven birdies but a couple of bogies meant that he’d sign for a one under par 70.  That was more than enough as the his morning 67 was Continue reading

Keelan McCarthy

Keelan McCarthy added his name to the famous Bruen Youths Trophy on Monday, the Lee Valley golfer beat a strong field in Muskerry to win the title.  The event, commemorating Cork’s greatest ever amateur golfer Jimmy Bruen is one of the biggest prizes in junior golf in Cork and is plated over 36 holes in Muskerry.  Seventeen year old McCarthy shot rounds of 68 and 73, he led by three shots after the opening round and the afternoon’s 73 was enough to hold the lead and win by one.  McCarthy started brightly in the morning with birdies on the second, third and fifth holes, although a double bogey on the tricky sixth threatened to derail his round.  Several pars followed and he traded a birdie with a bogey on the 12th and 14th.  The Lee Valley golfer finished strongly, he birdied the 15th and 16th and came home with two safe pars to build his strong lead.  Muskerry proved to be a Continue reading

Despite playing nine rounds of golf in the last seven days, Sean Desmond still had plenty left in the tank today as he aimed to retain his Bruen Youths title in Muskerry.  The Monkstown member spent last week in Ballybunion at the Kerry Boys, losing out on Friday morning to the eventual winner John Murphy.  After Ballybunion Sean headed for Cork Golf Club and played a huge role in Monkstown’s Senior Cup win on Saturday.  After the luxury of a day off on Sunday, he went to Muskerry hoping to add his name to a select group by winning a second Bruen Youths title.  Desmond opened with a 76, which had him three off the lead which was held by Jack Howard from Fota Island.  A few golfers were lurking near the top of the leaderboard, Timmy Broderick, Jack Egan and Darren Hourihan were all within two shots of the lead.  Howard added a 75 to his total in the afternoon, meaning that Desmond would need to shoot a level par 71 to win.  As it happened, Desmond was on level par heading onto the 18th, and he Continue reading
