Jack Egan added his name to a list of famous winners on Monday when he won the Bruen Youths. The Muskerry teen won by four strokes in impressive performance that saw him shoot two under par rounds. Egan led from the start with an opening 67. That included seven birdies and there was a great four of four birdies from the 12th to the 15th. His opening 67 had him one shot ahead of Eoghan O’Shaughnessy and the Muskerry Fred Daly players were the only two to break par.
In the second round Egan never let go of his lead. Again he had seven birdies but a couple of bogies meant that he’d sign for a one under par 70. That was more than enough as the his morning 67 was out of reach for the field. Robbie Walsh matched Egan’s afternoon 70 to take second place, while Eoghan O’Shaughnessy carded a second round 74 to take third place. Fionn Hickey was fourth and Wayne O’Callaghan took fifth place. The competition was again sponsored by the Cahill Family who have been associated with the event for many years. It’s a great finish to Egan’s summer. Last week he was a key member of the Muskerry Fred Daly team who won Munster honours in Clonmel.
Egan, the first home winner since 2002, now takes custody of the Bruen Boys Cup, originally the event was limited to under 18’s. The cup itself has its own legacy, it was won by Jimmy Bruen himself in 1944 when it was presented to him when he won the Muskerry Captain’s Prize. he Bruen family donated the cup to Muskerry in 1986 when the club wanted to honour the 50th anniversary of Jimmy Bruen’s win in the British Boys at Royal Birkdale. Although Bruen is also associated with Cork Golf Club, it was Muskerry who gave Bruen his first handicap, and that ultimately allowed him to go on to compete and win at the British Boys. It now contains the name of several famous golfers, most recently it was won by Sean Desmond and Cathal Butler, but it also holds the names of David Higgins, Gary O’Flaherty, Ronan Twomey and Davey O’Donovan. A large number of winners have gone on to turn pro including Mark Murphy, Michael Collins, Cian McNamara, Aaron O’Callaghan and Davey Barry.
