Shaun Carter from The Royal Dublin won the Munster Strokeplay with a four under par total 140 for the weather affected 36 hole Championship.  Rosslare’s Paul Murphy  and Castlemartyr’s Mark Shanahan both recorded second round 68’s to take second and third place respectively on two under par 142.  Continue reading

Cork’s Gary O’Flaherty in action in Lee Valley, he’s on of several local golfers in action in the Munster Strokeplay Championship this weekend.

The top golfers from Cork, Munster and Ireland will gather in Cork Golf Club on Saturday morning for the 72 hole Munster Strokeplay Championship.  Now in its tenth year, the Munster Strokeplay took the place of the Cork Scratch Cup which was the oldest competition of its type in the country.  In the past decade the competition has attracted a top class field and this year two thirds of the field are playing off a plus handicap. Ryan and Ruddy Win in Cork

The Munster PGA held their first event of 2015 this week when the Wilson Golf Singles took place in Cork GC on Monday.  Despite heavy rain on Sunday night, the sun was out on Monday morning for the competition.  16 holes were in play and the scoring was keen even though the course was playing long.  Despite the weather there was a full timesheet with the winter series again proving popular with PGA professionals from all over the province.  David Ruddy and David Ryan took the honours as they both finished on three under par.  Continue reading

Tony Finn (Cork) followed on from his first round score score to maintain the lead and win the Championship, three shots ahead of Mervyn Eager (Lucan) who carded a 73 today.  John Carroll (Bandon) came in third. Continue reading

Gillis Celebrates 50 years in Cork GC

Cork Golf Club celebrated over the weekend, but this time it was in the clubhouse as they honoured their head greenkeeper Anthony Gillis as he celebrated 50 years working at the famous Little Island course.  The club celebrated 125 years in 2015 has a rich history.  Although the club’s first home was in near Glanmire, the current location has served the club for over 110 years.  The current configuration was designed by the revered Dr Alister McKenzie in 1924, around the same time as he worked on Muskerry, Galway and the Old Course at Lahinch.
