Murphy Earns Irish Cap

John Murphy Links Trophy 2018There was great news in Kinsale Golf Club earlier this week when John Murphy became the latest Corkman to earn full Irish honours.  He has been selected in the six-man Irish team to compete in the European Amateur Team Championship in Germany in two weeks’ time.  Murphy was almost a certain pick given his recent form.  He won the St Andrews Links Trophy earlier this month, and last week he reached the quarter-finals of The Amateur Championship in Royal Aberdeen.

The Louisville student represented Ireland at the Boys Home Internationals in 2016, and gaining a full international cap this year was definitely a target.   “Being named to the Irish senior team is very exciting” said Murphy after the announcement.  “I still remember going to Carton House for the champions dinner when I was young and seeing the Irish panels.  I was in awe of even being in the presence of players like Continue reading

Cups & Shields set for Changes

Munster Golf Annual Delegates MeetingIn a bold move the GUI have just published a wave of proposals that could see major changes to the Cups and Shields.  The final decision on the proposals will also go back to club via the Provincial delegate meetings which take place next month.  Clubs are now being asked to discuss proposed changes to Junior Cup, the Jimmy Bruen and Purcell Purcell competitions in the biggest shake up in three decades.  With over 40,000 golfers taking part in the national competitions each year, the proposals represent the outputs of a survey involving 4,000 golfers.  The survey highlighted the significant need for reform, and a full review took place over the past six months to build a comprehensive set of proposals which give clubs the opportunity to amend the main inter-club handicap competitions.  While various club motions through the years have been defeated, there is a feeling now that a number of key central proposals will have a great chance of being passed.  The first proposal is to reduce the handicap limit for the Junior Cup from 5 to 4, and this is being proposed by three Continue reading

John Hickey (CIT) captured the Irish Intervarsity Championship today after he put together a great six under par round.  After shooting a flawless 68 yesterday, the Cork Golf Club golfer went two better today.  Hickey had a steady front nine and turned on two under thanks to birdies on the 4th and 7th.  He parred the 10th and then had three consecutive birdies to get to five under for the day.  He added another birdie on the 18th to get to nine under for the tournament.  Hickey had to sit on the clubhouse lead while the last three groups played out the final holes.  Overnight leader Jack McDonnell was the closest challenger, nut he had a very mixed opening nine, and a bogey on the 15th dropped him back to -7.  He did birdie the last but that meant that the CIT golfer won his first national title by one stroke.  Cathal Butler (Maynooth) slumped to a 77 after a disappointing back nine, he finished in a tie for 9th place alongside James Sugrue (CIT) who shot a 72 in Continue reading

Butler, McCormack & O’Keeffe earn Munster places

Fota Island Top Golfer Senior Scratch Cup 2016

Cathal Butler  pictured with the Fota Island Senior Scratch Cup.

There are three new picks on the 2016 Munster team, as Captain Phil Cooney plots to win this third interprovincial title in five years as captain.

Newly capped Cathal Butler jointly topped the order of merit, and the Kinsale man is one of three members of the team joining the team.  His order of merit placing was predominantly down to his performance in winning the Munster Strokeplay in May, but also his performances in the East of Ireland and the Irish Amateur Open added valuable points.  Butler has spent the winter working with the Harrington Scholars golf programme in Maynooth University where he is also a full time student.

As well as access to top level training and fitness programmes, Cathal also played in the competitive Hilary Golf Society outings in Dublin through the winter.  He’s also a member of the Irish Mens development squad and Butler is just back after competing for Ireland in the World University Championships in Brive.  Butler also beat a top class field in Fota Island in March to win the Senior Scratch Cup which bodes well as the inter-pro’s are being held on the same Deerpark course.

Andrew McCormack from Castletroy was also an Continue reading

Tom Cleary added another prestigious title to his collection today, the Irish Seniors Amateur Open.  The three time Munster Seniors Champion won his first national seniors title at Ardee Golf club after a final round 72 left him three ahead of the field.  Cleary was tied for the lead going into the final round, and there were nine other players within two shots of the lead.  Just like the Munster Seniors in Waterville, Cleary played very steady golf while all around him dropped shots on another testing day in Ardee.

The Cork Golf Club member opened on Wednesday with a three over par 74 to lie two shots off the lead.  He followed on Thursday with another 74 that saw him lead alongside England’s Andrew Carman.  The English international carded a four over par 75 in his final round to fall out of contention.  Cleary had a testing start, he bogied the 2nd & 3rd holes but he added two birdies at 6 and 8 to reach the turn on level par.  Two more pars followed and at that stage Tom was three shots ahead of Carman.  Cleary bogies the 15th but he was three shots ahead of the leader in the club house.  Cleary reached the 18th tee Continue reading
