Mallow golfer James Sugrue, who won the Amateur Championship this year, is October Person of  the Month. James has just announced he will turn Pro next summer. Mallow golfer James Sugrue, has joined the greats of golf, and has now been named Cork Person of the Month for October. James has also announced that he will turn professional next June, after his involvement in the US Open.  Last June, the 22 year old Mallow native won gold at the 124th Amateur Championship, following in the footsteps of Cork great Jimmy Bruen, and so became only the fourth Irishman to win the Amateur Championship, with a nail-biting one-hole win over Scotland’s Euan Walker at Portmarnock.  Other past Republic of Ireland winners were Bruen, Carr and McElhinney. Murray wins in Mallow

Ben Murray stole the show in Mallow on Sunday afternoon, winning the Senior Scratch Cup in front of a huge crowd.  The Waterford Castle man shot the lights out in the back nine, stealing the limelight from hometown star James Sugrue.  This was the first Senior Scratch Cup in Mallow for seven years and the organising group of Conor Dowling, Brian Attridge, Neil Gallagher and Sean O’Shea put on a great event.  With help from main sponsors Hegarty Building and Civil Engineering, there was a generous prize fund in place and the event filled quickly as some of Munster’s top golfers looked to claim one of the final pieces of silverware for the season.  The course was in great condition in Mallow, and the lightning fast greens suited the top class amateurs.  Monkstown’s Eoghan Long held the lead after the first 18, his four under par 68 gave him a one shot lead over James Sugrue, with Ben Murray, Joe O’Sullivan and Fionn Hickey Continue reading →

Jack Murphy wins Kerry Boys Championship, Daniel O’Sullivan wins Plate

Young Douglas golfer Jack Murphy might be just 13 years old, but he made a big impression in Ballybunion today when he won the famous Kerry Boys Championship.  And it was a double success for Cork as Daniel O’Sullivan won the Plate Final.

Murphy added his name to a list of high profile winners after a excellent display of golf this afternoon.  He was up against Lee Valley’s Keelan McCarthy in an all-Cork final, and despite being 5 years younger, the Douglas golfer came out on top.  He got off to a flying start this afternoon, he was three up after six holes on the challenging Cashen course.  By the turn he added another to go five up, and he closed out the match on the 14th after winning 5&4.  It was a great week for Murphy, he opened with a 77/82 in the strokeplay qualifier to make the top flight championship draw with a few shots to Continue reading →

Sugrue through to US Amateur Matchplay

James Sugrue is through to the final 64 in the US Amateur in Pinehurst, North Carolina.  The Mallow man was on the cut line of +4 when play was suspended last night, and had two holes to play to complete his round.  Needing two pars to get rthrough, Sugrue made quick work of the par three 17th, birdieing the hole to put himself in a great position.  He finished off the round with a regulation par on the difficult closing hole to qualify in the top half of the draw on +3.

Speaking after the strokeplay was completed, Sugrue was delighted to progress.  “I was just thinking par-par to be honest as they are two tough holes.  There was a lot of rain overnight and the course softened up a bit, so I was delighted to make the putt on 17.  The greens had been running at 13.5 so I had been very tentative earlier in the week.”  Pinehurst No 2, famous from the 2014 US Open among other majors is proving to be one of the toughest US Amateur courses, the 7,400 yard Donald Ross designed course is playing to a stroke average of 77, proving to be a worthy challenge for the world’s top amateurs.

The Amateur Champion is up against England’s Alex Fitzpatrick in the round of 64 and he’s looking forward to the matchplay format, despite the challenge of the course.    “It’s the hardest course I’ve played and you have to be really cute about where you put the ball.  At least now I can give a few putts a go after the rain.”

2019 The Amateur Open Championship at Portmarnock Golf Club

Portrush, Augusta, and New York will all be on James Sugrue’s agenda over the next 12 months.  That’s part of his reward for winning the famous Amateur Championship in Portmarnock.  The 22 year old Mallow man created a piece history, becoming only the second Cork golfer to win the most famous prize in amateur golf.  As the winner he’ll play in the Open Championship in Portrush next month, he’ll play in the US Open in Winged Foot New Jersey next year, and the established tradition is that the Amateur Championship winner always receives an invitation to the Masters.  Watched by his parents Margaret and Mick, and sister Michelle and brother Edward, and hundreds of supporters and friends from Mallow, James calmly rolled Continue reading →

Sugrue through to Final Qualifying for 147th Open

AIG Senior Cup Area Semi Finals 2018 Cork Golf Club Sunday 24th June 2018Mallow’s James Sugrue has an opportunity to qualify for the British Open in Carnoustie, he booked his place in final qualifying for the British Open today when he shot an eight under par 64 in Baltray to lead the regional qualifying event.  Sugrue started with two birdies and he as four under at the turn.  Not content with that he birdied 11, 12 and 16, and he closed with another birdie on the par five 18th in a flawless round.  With fellow Mallow Senior Cup golfer Conor Dowling on the bag with him, Sugrue beat the field by four shots to claim the first of seven final qualifying spots available.  It was a consolation of sorts for Sugrue, he narrowly missed on selection for the Irish team to compete in the European Championships in two weeks’ time.  In any case, he’ll now be playing in the Continue reading →
